Lab 13: Ciliate Discovery

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Purpose:

The purpose of this lab was to continue to find, identify, capture, and take pictures of the ciliates that we find in the soil we collected at the beginning of the year.

Procedure:

  • Micro pipette a 10 ul drop of the water from the flooded plate onto a concavity slide.
  • Observe, take pictures, and try to identify the soil ciliate.
  • Add methlycellulose if needed to help the soil ciliates to slow down when you are trying to catch one.

Data:

Conclusion:

My ciliate that I found was a Pleuronematida in the Oligohymenophorea class. This was a very successful lab in that I was able to get and identify a soil ciliate from my soil.
