The 30th Annual School of Education (SOE) Senior Recognition Banquet honored outstanding seniors within the SOE and its departmental programs. Seniors were recognized for their excellence in academic and fieldwork in education programs and their readiness to impact the world.

Words of Wisdom from SOE Seniors [04/22/2015]

WordsWisdonEach year, as Baylor teacher candidates prepare to graduate, they pass on words of wisdom to the School of Education (SOE) juniors, who are about to embark on the exciting adventure of being an SOE intern.

The senior year in the SOE provides an exciting capstone experience, where students are full-time interns, teaching in a public school for the entire academic year and learning to lead a classroom. The Baylor program is designed to make sure they are ready to be professionals, and it works! Employers who hire Baylor graduates say they perform more like second-year than first-year teachers.

EDP Doctoral Student Wins Dissertation Award [3/9/2015]

Scalzo-Blog-450Baylor School of Education Doctoral Candidate in Educational Psychology Rachel Scalzo received the James L. Kopp Memorial Scholarship for her dissertation, “The Analysis of Behavioral Indicators as a Measure of Satiation.” The scholarship is awarded to only three students statewide, and Scalzo is the first Baylor recipient.

As part of the award, Scalzo gets to present her research at the Applied Behavior Analysis International Conference in San Antonio May 22 – 26, and the award defrays a portion of the costs to travel.

In February, Scalzo and her mentor, Dr. Tonya Davis, SOE assistant professor in Educational Psychology, attended the four-day Texas Association for Behavior Analysis Regional Conference in Houston, where Scalzo presented her research and received her award. Continue Reading →

BU Graduates Achieve 100 Percent Pass Rate on Texas Teacher Certification Exams [12/4/2-14]

100percentGraphic-300wide-blogGraduates in Baylor’s education programs for the 2013-14 year achieved a 100 percent pass rate on certification exams in the State of Texas. The overall state average in Texas for degree completers in 2013-14 was 94 percent.

The rate includes all tests taken by Baylor graduating students, with more than 70 percent of testing students coming from the School of Education (SOE). Continue Reading →

Two Memorable Teachers/Mentors Honored by Baylor School of Education [4/25/2014]

HookerThumbA high school teacher from Jacksonville, Texas, and a volunteer coach from Phoenix, Ariz., were honored by the Baylor School of Education (SOE).

The Baylor SOE each year honors memorable teachers or mentors as part of its annual Senior Recognition Banquet. Memorable educators are nominated by the Baylor students, who submit an essay to support their nomination.

The late Marilyn Hooker of Jacksonville, nominated by senior education major Meagan Pike, and Floyd Samons of Phoenix, nominated by senior Health Science Studies major Sabrina Kinzley, were both honored at the banquet April 14 on the Baylor campus in Waco. Baylor School of Education Honors Outstanding Seniors [4/22/2014]

During the 29th Annual School of Education (SOE) Senior Recognition Banquet, the SOE honored outstanding seniors within the school and its various programs. Students were recognized not only for their accomplishments as undergraduates, but also for their preparedness to impact the world.

Alexa Samuel, of Spring, Texas, received the EDICUT Pre-Service Educator of the Year Award for her exceptional performances within and outside of the Baylor classroom. Also known as “The Dean’s Award,” this honor is presented at each private university education program in Texas by the Education Deans of Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas (EDICUT). SOE Grad Student Elected to AERA Graduate Student Council [4/15/2014]

KariHodgesKari Hodge, a graduate student in the Baylor School of Education’s Educational Psychology Department, was elected as one of nine officers of the Gradate Student Council of the American Educational Research Association (AERA). She is the first Baylor representative to serve in such a role.

Baylor SOE Students and Programs Receive Statewide Recognition [4/8/2014]

QuestQualityLogo-ThumbFive students and three programs in the Baylor School of Education (SOE) received statewide recognition from Quest for Quality. A collaboration between CREATE and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Quest for Quality identifies exemplary teacher candidates and exceptional practices in university-based teacher-preparation programs.

Recognitions announced this spring for Baylor SOE included five teacher candidates, a field-based instructional practice, an individual faculty practice and a K-12 partnership, covering every Quest for Quality recognition category.
