The 30th Annual School of Education (SOE) Senior Recognition Banquet honored outstanding seniors within the SOE and its departmental programs. Seniors were recognized for their excellence in academic and fieldwork in education programs and their readiness to impact the world.

SOE’s Katy Wiswall Named Baylor Outstanding Staff Member [3/5/2015]

Katy Wiswall

Katy Wiswall, BBA ’92, MACC ’11, financial and grants manager for the School of Education(SOE), was named an outstanding staff member of Baylor University at a ceremony in Waco Hall in January. She was among eight Baylor employees honored.

Also honored was former SOE staffer Andrea Baker, who moved recently to the new College of Health and Human Sciences. In addition, SOE graduate Jon Capron, BSEd ’03, MSEd ’05, who is assistant head coach of Baylor’s cross country team, received the BaylorPLUS Award. Baylor’s Department of Human Resources hosted the awards ceremony, and all awards were presented by Baylor President Ken Starr. Continue Reading →

A Look Back: SOE Highlights from 2014 [12/30/2015]

In 2014, the Baylor School of Education began chronicling events, announcements, awards and accomplishments online through the news blog Instant Impact  and a new SOE Facebook page in addition to the SOE website. We continued keeping in touch with alumni through the Impact newsletter sent via mail, but now in a new and larger format. The Impact newsletter has a new website, too.

In addition, of course, you have read about the SOE in publications including Baylor Magazine, Baylor Proud, the university’s social media outlets, and through various independent news sources.

SOE graduate to head Kentucky Community and Technical College System [12/19/2014]

JayBox-BlogSchool of Education (SOE) graduate Jay Box, EdD ’94, has been named president of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). The organization’s board of regents voted unanimously to choose Box for the position on Nov. 16. Box has been serving as chancellor of the Kentucky system since 2009 — providing system-wide leadership for academic affairs, economic development, work force training, and research and policy analysis. He will begin his presidency on Jan. 16, succeeding Dr. Michael B. McCall, KCTCS’s first and only president.

SOE Preservice Teachers Receive State Scholarships [8/5/2013]

KylieTerry-ThumbTwo students in the School of Education (SOE) were awarded the Mathematics Preservice Teacher Scholarship from the Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics (TCTM). Both Baylor students from the Department of Curriculum & Instruction were announced as recipients during the annual Conference for the Advancement of Mathematic Teachers in Fort Worth July 21-23.

Kylie Terry (pictured above) and Niki Kratzer (pictured below) were two of 10 undergraduates awarded the statewide scholarship for the 2014-2015 school year. Both Terry and Kratzer plan to pursue teacher certification in EC-6. Terry is a junior from Katy, and Kratzer is a junior from Libertyville, Ill. Continue Reading →

SOE Grad Named Regional Superintendent of the Year [7/16/14]

M-McFarland ThumbnailBaylor School of Education graduate Dr. Michael McFarland, superintendent of Lancaster ISD, is the Region 10 Superintendent of the Year.

The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) announced winners in each of the state’s eighteen regions. Five finalists will be named in August, and the statewide winner will be announced in September at the convention of TASB and the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). Dr. Susan Johnsen Receives Prestigious Award from Council for Exceptional Children [5/7/2014]

NewJohnsenThumbDr. Susan Johnsen, Professor of Educational Psychology in the Baylor School of Education, received the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of individuals with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. The author of more than 200 publications, Johnsen is an expert in gifted education, and this is the first time the CEC award has been given to an educator in the field of gifted education. Baylor SOE Students and Programs Receive Statewide Recognition [4/8/2014]

QuestQualityLogo-ThumbFive students and three programs in the Baylor School of Education (SOE) received statewide recognition from Quest for Quality. A collaboration between CREATE and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Quest for Quality identifies exemplary teacher candidates and exceptional practices in university-based teacher-preparation programs.

Recognitions announced this spring for Baylor SOE included five teacher candidates, a field-based instructional practice, an individual faculty practice and a K-12 partnership, covering every Quest for Quality recognition category. SOE Grad a Finalist for National Education Award [4/8/2014]

MartyCrawford-ThumbnailDr. Marty Crawford, BSEd ’96, Superintendent of West ISD, is a finalist for a national educator award. Nominated by his education colleagues for the 2014 LifeChanger of the Year, Crawford was recognized because of his work getting students back to school after the April 17 fertilizer plant explosion in West last year.
