Waco ISD Superintendent Dr. Bonny Cain and SOE Dean Dr. Jon Engelhardt
The Baylor School of Education (SOE) and the Baylor Provost’s Office hosted a great crowd at the retirement reception for SOE Dean Dr. Jon Engelhardt on April 28. The event was in the Great Hall of Truett Seminary on the Baylor campus.
Guest speakers included Baylor Provost Dr. David Garland; Dr. Bonny Cain, Waco ISD superintendent, representing the Greater Waco Area Superintendent group; Donell Teaff, representing the Dean’s Advisory Council; Dr. Larry Browning, representing the SOE faculty; and SOE Associate Dean Dr. Doug Rogers.
Baylor School of Education Dean Dr. Jon Engelhardt has received the Robert B. Howsam Award, a lifetime achievement award given by the Texas Association for Colleges of Teacher Education (TACTE).
The Howsam Award is presented only on occasion and recognizes individuals who have exhibited exceptional leadership at state and national levels, have made significant contributions to educational spheres and have a long and enduring history with teaching. Continue Reading →

Baylor University School of Education celebrated its Midway ISD PDS (professional development school) campuses today by presenting specialty Baylor signage to its two new partner PDS campuses and to Midway High School, which has been a PDS for five years. Dr. Jon Engelhardt, dean of the Baylor School of Education, has announced his intent to retire next year.
Engelhardt, who became dean in July of 2007, is also a professor of Curriculum and Instruction. Before coming to Baylor, he served as a faculty member in mathematics education and administrator at Arizona State University for 16 years. Prior to the Baylor deanship, he served for 20 years as an education dean at the University of Texas El Paso, Northern Arizona University, and Wichita State University. Continue Reading →
The “Celebrating Exceptional Stars Gala,” hosted by the Baylor Center for Developmental Disabilities (BCDD) on May 10, drew a crowd of 215 to the Fifth Floor of Cashion Academic Building on Baylor’s campus for dinner, dancing, and a silent auction. Attendees included community leaders, Baylor faculty and staff, and many parents of children who receive services at the Baylor Autism Resource Clinic (BARC) and the Clinic for Assessment, Research and Education (CARE). Five students and three programs in the Baylor School of Education (SOE) received statewide recognition from Quest for Quality. A collaboration between CREATE and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Quest for Quality identifies exemplary teacher candidates and exceptional practices in university-based teacher-preparation programs.
Recognitions announced this spring for Baylor SOE included five teacher candidates, a field-based instructional practice, an individual faculty practice and a K-12 partnership, covering every Quest for Quality recognition category. The Greater Waco Area Superintendents (GWAS) group, a partnership organized by Baylor University’s School of Education, was recently recognized as an “Exemplary K-12 Partnership” by the Center for Research, Evaluation and Advancement of Teacher Education (CREATE). SOE dean Dr. Jon Engelhardt said, “This distinction gives public acknowledgement for the high quality efforts these educational leaders expend working together and the accomplishments they have realized on behalf of the greater Waco community.” Read more here.
