Here are my Top 10 reasons second semester rocks! These are just mine, there are so many more!

  1. Common Grounds Cowboy Coffees: They are the perfect treat for a warm afternoon.
  2. The Garden of Contentment: It is next to Armstrong Browning Library and is a prime study spot.
  3. All University Sing: It is a great show created and run by fellow students, and always a blast!
  4. Dr Pepper Hour: AKA the best hour at Baylor (Dr Pepper + Blue Bell vanilla ice cream every Tuesday 3-4pm in the SUB).
  5. Diadeloso: It is the Day of the Bear, which is celebrated on-campus with tons of activities and FREE FOOD!
  6. The Bear Trail: Is a trail that wraps all around campus, and whether walking it or running it, it’s best in the spring.
  7. Baylor Basketball Games: DUH! There is nothing more exciting than to watch some Baylor Basketball at the Ferrell Center.
  8. Baylor Baseball Games: Is there a better get away on a spring afternoon than a day at the ballpark?
  9. Cameron Park Zoo: Yes, Waco has a zoo and yes it is awesome!
  10. Baylor Intramural Sports: Get much more competitive because this semester decides who the overall winner will be in the university intramural championship!

Spring has Sprung!

By Laura Teague

This is one of my favorite times of year at Baylor – the bluebonnets are in full bloom, the sun is almost always shining and summer is almost here. One thing I was afraid I would miss when I moved to Texas was the beauty of an Oregon spring. The few days that it’s sunny are stunning, and I wasn’t sure Texas could live up. I was wrong. Baylor is always gorgeous, but the campus is just beautiful in April and May.

A group of my friends decided to take advantage of the weather and get some pictures in the bluebonnets at Cameron Park. Being from Oregon, this was the first time I had ever taken pictures with bluebonnets, and it was fun feeling like a part of Texas tradition!

Spring at Baylor

Outside

Finally, after months of walking to class in bipolar, sometimes miserable weather, winter is over and spring has arrived! I have to say that spring is my favorite time of the year on campus. Especially after all of those rainy, dreary winter days, it is very refreshing to realize once again just how beautiful our campus is. From the sun shining off the top of Pat Neff to the crisp green grass of Fountain Mall, walking around campus has become instantly more enjoyable thanks to the change in weather.

There are some definite signs of the changes on campus, and I thought I would just give you all a preview of what to expect around this time of year. First off, the number of hammocks on campus spikes immediately once the first day of sunny weather rolls around. Hammocking is a common activity amongst many students on campus, pretty much at any point during the day. It is rare to find an empty tree without a student relaxing/studying in a hammock. So, if you already own a hammock and enjoy putting one up on a nice day, you will fit in very nicely. Or, take this as your heads up to possibly invest in one.

It’s also not uncommon to see students passing time by playing pick-up games of various sports. You will often see a quick game of ultimate Frisbee, football or soccer going on when the weather is nice and when the majority of people are out of class. This can be a great way to not only get active, but also meet some new friends by asking to join in. So, be sure to get outside!

Overall, as I mentioned before, spring is my favorite time of year here at Baylor, and I’m sure many of my fellow students agree. It’s a great time to get out and enjoy the weather, possibly meet some new people and be thankful that winter is gone for a while. It is also a time to look forward to Diadeloso, the approaching end of the semester and the great thing called summer.

Spring at Baylor (by Lexa Johnson)

Spring is a wonderful, adventurous time at Baylor. There are many activities around campus to engage in with friends. Spring break is one of the highlights, and I had an incredible break with some friends from Baylor. I went skiing in Colorado with one of my best friends, her family, and some other Baylor students. We had an absolute blast enjoying the break with some new friends from school. We drove 15 hours from Waco to Pagosa Springs in southern Colorado. The snow was ideal for our trip because it snowed 19” the day before we got there. One of my favorite parts of the trip was seeing Baylor alums and getting to talk to them about their experiences. I love how Baylor is truly a family and current and past students are always so proud to be from Baylor. We even did a Sic ‘Em on the chairlift with some fellow Baylor students!

Following Spring Break my Lifegroup (church small group) got together with some other groups to throw an Easter party! We went to a local park and celebrated the holiday by having an Easter egg hunt, playing games, and worshipping together. I really enjoyed getting to see everyone come together to celebrate the fact that Jesus was raised from the dead and the new life we have because of Him.

Spring sports are another fun activity at Baylor. The baseball games are especially fun to attend with the weather being so warm and beautiful. My friends and I cheered the Bears on to victory yesterday against West Virginia. It was exciting to watch the baseball team do so well and see how many Baylor fans came out to support the team. Spring at Baylor is an exciting time with celebrations and baseball games to enjoy coupled with beautiful weather.

Spring Social Season (by Hunter Gorman)

The green grass growing, the sun warming, and the new spring pledge classes of the over 40 Baylor Greek organizations in full swing, can only mean one thing and one thing only: Social Season at Baylor. This is a loved time of year on campus with an endless amount of fraternity/sorority mixers, take-a-dates, and dances. The time of year when 10th street is filled with sporty youths, the library filled with those more scholarly, and the thought of the fast approaching spring break on everyone’s mind.

Spring truly is a great time here at Baylor, and really gets people in the mood for some dancing! Check out this video of Baylor’s “Harlem Shake!”

As I said, dances are a common theme of the spring time and it honestly can get a little overwhelming when you think about the number of events that you can have and they all seem to happen in the same week! School work is something that is very easy to get behind on during the spring season, especially freshman year, while you continue to experience that euphoric feeling of new found community.

For those of you that will be coming to Baylor as freshman for the nearing fall semester, spring is a time to look forward and also a goal to work for during your first semester. Aside from the various Greek and other student organization’s events, Baylor University has a lot going on during the spring time such as spring break (as mentioned), the Easter Holiday, the fun and exciting “Diadeloso,” and then finally, summer time!

During the spring it is very easy to lose track of time and before you know it you are almost done with your first full year of college (that’s my case anyway).

For those who are looking to Baylor as incoming freshman, get excited! Baylor is a great place that thrives on community and tradition. Finally for those of you looking to Baylor as a place to restart your college journey, look no more! Baylor’s great people and many communities could not be more excited for you to get here!
