Six Reasons Why You Should Join the Baylor Golden Wave Marching Band

By Maggie Malone

Just because you’re not a marcher doesn’t mean you should skip this article. On the contrary, the Golden Wave isn’t an uncommon sight to see on campus, this post will give you a piece of insight as to who we are. Who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised!

Ahhhh, spring. The sun is out, the flowers are blooming, and oh, what’s that? It’s audition season! That’s right ladies and gents! With that first footstep onto our campus, you’ve entered the home of one of the most tradition-steeped organizations on campus, the Golden Wave Marching Band! (Usually referred to as BUGWB, pronounced BUG-wuhb)

I came from a small, rural Missouri high school marching band, so making the leap to a large (to me, at least) collegiate Texas marching band was quite a jump for me. I had so much to adjust to when I arrived at pre-season week at the end of summer. In fact, I hadn’t even met anyone in my section because I sent in my color guard audition by video.

But joining BUGWB was one of the best decisions I have ever made here at Baylor. I’ve absolutely loved the experiences and all the fun I’ve had with this organization. Over the past couple of seasons, it’s become very near and dear to my heart.

Without further ado, here’s why you should join our 300+ member family:

1. Tradition

As I hinted above, BUGWB is pretty old. We’ve been around for over 100 years! But besides that, the band itself has its own traditions we pass down from class to class over the years. We’ve let some traditions go, as we moved from Floyd Casey Stadium, but at the beginning of a new era of marching in McLane Stadium, we’ve embraced some new traditions as well! And not all of these traditions are serious. In fact, some of them are downright crazy. For example, there’s Spirit Fridays, where we wear different costumes to practice, depending on the theme.

2. Free Stuff

I shouldn’t have to list anything else, because at the mention of “free food” you should all come running. I know that after a few hours of hard practice, we certainly do. On game days, we cater food from nearby restaurants, like Jason’s Deli or Chick-Fil-A. On bowl trips, we also eat at some pretty swanky places as well. But wait, there’s more! Not only do you get free food, you get some pretty cool gear! Because BUGWB is sponsored by Nike, you get a ton of Nike apparel. While you do have to pay a fee, everything you acquire over the marching season more than covers that.

3. Awesome Behind-the-Scenes Access

By this, I mean that, as part of the halftime entertainment, you get to experience things that no one else really gets to. You get to know about all the inner workings of things, and visit places that no one else sees. You get to be on the front lines of all the action. It’s exhausting, but pretty cool too.

4. Football Games

Speaking of exhausting, game day is one of the most bone-numbing days of the semester. But don’t let that scare you. Those were some of my favorite days. Hours and hours of practice, short nights, and lots of standing all fall away when we take the field to perform our pre-game and halftime shows. And afterwards, the crowd doesn’t just cheer. The sound that the thousands watching make is closer to a roar. It’s enough to cheer your heart and lift your spirits. The feeling is truly indescribable. Another thing. You don’t have to fight with the rest of the student body for tickets because there’s already a seat at the stadium with your name on it! And by name, I mean a sticker. Everyone loves stickers, right?

5. Bowl Trips

Now, even though Baylor lost both of the bowl games that I attended, I still had a blast. Bowl trips are even more tiring than regular game days, because we have to be there a few days before, but these trips are fantastic. Besides practicing, we always are given the opportunity to enjoy delicious meals and fun activities. When I went on the Fiesta Bowl trip, we got to eat at a restaurant that you entered via slide!

band 6

6. Shenanigans

Yes. These do happen. Many of my best college stories come from BUGWB. From buses breaking down on the side of the road, to nighttime hotel explorations, to twenty color guard members cramming under a blanket in the cold, BUGWB can often seem like one unplanned adventure after another. But that’s one of the reasons that makes it fun!

band shen

Now I would be lying if I said BUGWB was smooth sailing. But the memories you make and the people you meet become some of your favorite things at Baylor. It’s an absolutely thrilling experience, and I’m glad that I’ve had the opportunity to experience it. Sadly, I won’t be marching this fall, as I’m studying abroad, but next fall I’ll be back on the field. That’s the thing about BUGWB (and Baylor too, for that matter). You miss it when you’re away, or on the off-season, but when you return for another year, it feels like home.

Get Up Baylor, It’s GameDay!

By Laura Teague

First of all, thank y’all so much for voting! I was able to win the VIP tailgate experience for GameDay – and as promised, here is the inside scoop! First of all, let me explain – GameDay is a TV show that chooses the biggest game of the week and visits the campus to film the show live and discuss the games for the week. The fact that they chose Baylor is a huge honor and gave the university tons of publicity!

Most of my friends went to the stadium around 4 or 5 p.m. on Friday to get a good spot to camp out in line for the student area behind the host’s desk. My friends and I went over that night to see the line and everyone’s tents and signs. Since I won the VIP passes, I, and 10 of my friends, didn’t have to get a tent (#blessed) and were able to just show up the morning of the show. I wish I had taken pictures of everyone’s signs – people are so creative! Most of them were poking fun at KSU and TCU, as well as their respective coaches. After a few pictures with the GameDay bus and our beautiful stadium, my group of friends and I got to go home and sleep before a big day!

The Night Before!

The Night Before!

We got to the stadium around 7:30, and it was already packed. Students had stayed there all night and then more poured in to fill the rest of the plaza in front of McLane Stadium.

Our tailgate area was directly behind part of the set, and a local BBQ place called Viteks had been preparing food for us all morning, so we had plenty to eat! Before the show started, one of the hosts, David Pollack, came to our area and hung out with us! Here is me attempting to teach him how to do a Sic ‘Em!

After the show was over and we were stuffed with food, we got to go on set and take a picture with the rest of the hosts. Then, it was home for a quick nap and off to win our second Big XII title! Overall, it was one of the most incredible weekends I have ever had and a huge positive image for Baylor.

Why Baylor Is Better Than Everywhere Else

By Derek Byrne

It’s hard to believe this is my last full month at Baylor. I knew this was my dream school as soon as I visited campus, and that hasn’t changed. There have certainly been some unexpected challenges in the last four years, but I’ve also had opportunities and found relationships I never could have anticipated. I could list dozens of reasons I’m grateful to call Baylor my home, but here are just a few moments that I couldn’t have experienced anywhere other than on this beautiful campus next to the Brazos.

  • Remarkable faculty and staff. A few months ago, I spoke at an event for prospective students for the department of Journalism, Public Relations & New Media. A few days later, I received a handwritten note from our department chair, thanking me for serving the department. Dr. Stone, who manages the entire department on top of being an outstanding professor, took the time to write a note of gratitude to me. The relationships I’ve built with faculty and staff at Baylor are easily one of the most valuable parts of my time here, and this note of thanks was another reminder of the commitment faculty and staff have to investing in students.
  • Baylor Football. I’ve laughed. I’ve danced. I’ve wanted to cry. The Bears have made themselves known as one of the most entertaining shows in college football, and being in the stands for four seasons has given me some unforgettable moments. Running the Line, travel packages to bowl games and a beautiful new student tailgating section show the value Baylor places on its fans, and the university gives us opportunities you won’t find anywhere else.
  • Community partnerships. Being a student doesn’t mean waiting a few more years to do the things you love. Baylor and Waco seek opportunities to serve each other, and chances for students to get hands-on experience in a great community are common here. I’m currently interning in the office of Marketing & Communications at McLennan Community College, refining my skill in the education public relations field at a top-notch institution. Whether it’s marketing, child development, health care or business, there’s a place in town to put your education into action.
  • Unparalleled traditions. Baylor Homecoming might be the best thing in the world, and I’ve seen dozens of impressive Sing performances. There are also less flashy traditions that are unique Baylor experiences. Every Tuesday afternoon, I meet some friends in the SUB for Dr Pepper Hour. A quick afternoon break with good people and good ice cream is the perfect reminder that Baylor is a place for life as well as learning.

I could continue for a while, but these are a few of the university’s defining features that have made my time here so valuable. Academically, socially and personally, I’ve had opportunities and experiences here that I never expected, and I know I wouldn’t be able to find them anywhere but Baylor.600359_10151802542687286_1575443189_n

Fall Means Football In the South

By Emily Martin

I have never been a huge fan of football. I lived overseas in Singapore for seven years, so the only “football” we had involving playing with a round ball and our feet. Attending Baylor has definitely changed my outlook on this popular American sport, and now it is one of my favorite things about this university.

My favorite football memory by far is my very first experience running the Baylor Line. I was in the very front of the Line, which seemed like a great idea at the time. However, as soon as the rope dropped and people started darting across the field, I was dragged down by a girl behind me and trampled until my roommate pulled me back up. It’s been a year, and I still have a scar from the turf burn. I love that scar because it reminds me of how much fun it was to run the Line. I never missed a chance to put on my Line Jersey and help to support my school.

This year is a little different now that I’m not running the Line, but it is still just as much fun to attend games! It is funny how you form such bonds with total strangers during a game. You’ll be high-fiving people you’ve never met before and bonding with your neighbor over a bad call made by the referees. Football definitely brings out a different side of people when the game intensifies!

Another aspect of football that I never really understood until I came to college is watch parties. I thought that football was boring, and I didn’t understand why people would want to waste four hours of their lives just to watch a game on TV. Now that I am a Baylor student, however, I absolutely love cheering on my team! My favorite watch party by far was for the OU game. All of the Waco Young Life leaders got together at my friend Sharon’s house and had a pancake watch party. Sharon’s husband, Ronnie, made us any kind of pancake we wanted (I had chocolate chip…SO GOOD!), and we all just hung out and cheered on the Bears! I think that is one of the best things about going to a Division 1 school – You have a team that you can actually watch on TV and cheer on even when they’re not playing at home. Of course, it helps when your school’s team is good, but it also gives you a reason to hang out and bond with the people you love.

Football never used to mean much to me, but now it is one of my favorite things about being a Baylor Bear. I have the privilege to go to an amazing school that has a wonderful Christian heritage, great academics, a beautiful campus, friendly students and an awesome football team! It’s hard to find a university with all five of those things, and Baylor definitely beats them all. Sic ‘Em Bears!

Finding My Place with Baylor Football

By Jay Fankhauser

What do I like most about Baylor? Baylor has numerous opportunities for students to get involved and to contribute to the university’s culture by doing something that they are passionate about. In my case, as a freshman, I was given the opportunity to work as an assistant video coordinator for the football team, and I have done this job for the past two years. It has been a unique experience, traveling to road games and bowl games and filming practice everyday.

Working closely with the coaches and players in a sport that I enjoy and have spent my life around has increased my sense of pride in Baylor and has helped me find my place.  Working in the athletic department provides me the opportunity to be a professional in a learning environment. Going to school with 13,000 other students is drastically different than my high school experience, in which my graduating class consisted of only 250, but you can be as involved on Baylor’s campus as any school in the country because of the great amount of opportunities.

Positions to lead and innovate are everywhere at Baylor. Students run Baylor, and it is by students contributions that the university will continue to grow.  While others may have different experiences like student government positions or professional jobs on campus, students can actively make an impact at Baylor. A tip for you high school seniors – when you are applying to schools and you talk to admissions counselors at different universities, ask how great of an influence the students have over the university and if students have the opportunity to work professionally during their undergraduate careers. It is incredibly beneficial for students to be involved in an environment outside of the classroom.

Have a warm October, and Sic ‘Em Bears!

These are a Few of My Favorite Things

By Marisela Martin

Hey Everyone!

So this is my first time ever writing a blog post, and honestly, it’s quite exciting. I’m the type of girl who keeps her own diary, but sharing my thoughts with you all is even more invigorating, especially when I get to share the highs and lows about one of my favorite places in the world – Baylor!

So let me share a little about myself! I’m currently a sophomore from Dallas. I’m majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Public Relations. Because y’all are still getting to know me, I thought would start with sharing my top three favorite things that Baylor offers!

Football

1. FOOTBALL!!!!

Like come on! Anyone who saw our game against TCU knows that Baylor has a lot to be proud of with football! Not many teams can come up 24 points in the last 10 minutes! Texans are naturally born with a love for football no matter who you are, and this love is apparent in Baylor Nation.

Homecoming

2. Homecoming

I don’t know if you can feel any closer to the Baylor Community than when you participate in Homecoming! Baylor is home to the largest collegiate homecoming parade in the nation. There is nothing like being a part of this amazing parade. Words just can’t explain it.

Christmas on 5th 2013

3. Christmas on 5th

Now, my favorite time of the year is Christmas! When I’m at home, I usually decorate our house and set up the Christmas tree. It’s an annual tradition. However, last year I missed this tradition for the first time because I was at Baylor for my freshman year. It really brought me down and made me miss home. So when I heard about Christmas on 5th, I knew I had to go. It was literally the most magical moment and made my list of favorite memories here at Baylor.

So that’s it for this week guys! I can’t wait to show you more about my experience here! Until next time, Sic’ Em!

Why I’m Happy We’re 6-1

By Torie Abbott

Pic 1

For Baylor University, football has become a huge deal. With one of the hottest new stadiums in NCAA history, along with a killer team with uniforms to match, Baylor Football is looking better than ever. There is tailgating and sailgating. The campus of Baylor is thriving with support for Bryce, Shock and the rest of the Bears.

With the opening of McLane Stadium, the Bears have been unstoppable. The turn around the Baylor Bears have made in the last few seasons is nothing short of impressive, and some would argue, unbelievable. With a 6-0 record, the Bears traveled to West Virginia where they were handed a heartbreaking loss.

Why am I happy about this? Do not get me wrong, I was just as upset as the next person about the loss. But to think that Baylor fans are upset about one loss when only a few seasons ago, a 6-1 record was unthinkable.

In a couple of years, Art Briles and his team have given Baylor a new stadium, a Heisman trophy and a conference championship. That is something very special. How many other teams in college football can say that?

Regardless of the team final record, something special is going on at Baylor University. Morale is high, and expectations even higher. For Baylor students, we support our team. “Baylor we are, and Baylor we will always be.” And as always, it is a sweet, sweet time to be a Baylor Bear. Sic ‘Em!

Speechless

By Patara Williams

I’m never speechless.

Never.

Picture 5

But as I approached a white-washed pedestrian bridge overlooking a glorious river, I was. Until now, I had never seen the Brazos displayed with such grandeur. Glorious. Thousands of things crossed my mind:

Since when is the Brazos blue?

Is it blue?

Is my mind playing tricks on me?

Will this bridge fit 40,000 people at one time?

Of course not Patara, that’s preposterous.

WHOA. What’s that?!

As if it were rising from the dead, the McLane Stadium rose from the waters majestically, and then there was a flood…of tears.

I began to recall all of my experiences at Floyd Casey Stadium…my Baylor years flashed before my eyes.

More than 45,000 people gathered last Sunday to witness the Bears take down the SMU Ponies, and boy did they do it!

With each sack, with each run, with each interception, my heart raced, and my blood pressure soared…and I loved it. I was making history. There are 300 million people in America, and I can say I was one of 45,000 to experience Baylor’s first game in McLane Stadium. Why does that excite me so much?

Maybe, it’s because the Bears haven’t been ranked so highly in pre-season since 1957!

Maybe, it’s because I can recall when the stands were far from full, and the people in the stands before this Golden Era were equaled to the current number of Baylor freshmen.

Maybe, it’s because I feel so delighted and so spoiled by God to be able to experience Baylor at a time when it’s unparalleled.

But maybe, it’s just because I love football.

Palace on the Brazos

By Laura Teague

Last Thursday, I got to do something I had been dreaming about for the past year: walk across the beautiful pedestrian bridge by the Law School and get a glimpse of McLane Stadium, totally finished and more beautiful than I ever would have imagined.

Unknown

To say I was excited would be a complete understatement. I was ECSTATIC. If you were to ask anyone, I am a football fanatic. As soon as our schedule was announced, I had a countdown to the first game on my phone, appropriately titled “The Most Wonderful Time of Year.” While some people believe that’s Christmas, I would argue it’s college football season!

Well, this past weekend absolutely lived up to that prediction, starting with the Tradition’s Rally on Thursday. The first big pep rally of the year is always fun, but having it in the new stadium added a whole new level of bustle and excitement. My roommates and I were lucky enough to get wristbands to be on the field for the rally and Phillip Phillips concert after. There may have been tears walking out onto the field. Don’t judge.

Then all of the sudden, it was Sunday – GAME DAY! The student section was directly in the sun for the entire first quarter (and the two hours we sat there before the game even began), but it was worth every second! After crushing SMU (all in a days work), we all headed home and crashed. It was a busy weekend, but as one of my professors has been constantly reminding me, being a Baylor student during this cool time in our school’s history is something I will never forget. Who else can say they got to run the line in both Floyd Casey and McLane Stadium? Or got to watch Baylor football not just rebuild, but take control of the Big 12 and college football in general? I am so thankful for these past three seasons, and I can’t wait to see what we are able to accomplish this year!
