There’s Plenty to Do

By Aaron Harder

One of the many reasons I love attending Baylor is all the opportunities the university offers students. Certainly Baylor sets up its students well in post-graduate life with connections, a great education, and life-long friendships, but there also great opportunities to participate in as an undergrad.

Yes, Baylor is full of student organizations spanning almost every possible subject. However, Baylor also offers a lot of activities for students to do regardless of what club, organization, or Greek life group you join.

Baylor has a great theater program that produces at least two plays or musicals per semester. There is also an improv comedy group that usually performs three times a semester. In the fall there is Pigskin, which is the performance of the top eight acts from All-University Sing, during Homecoming Week. After Dark during Parents Weekend is a showcase of the artistic and musical talent Baylor has to offer and is a really cool show. In the spring there is All-University Sing, as well as Diadeloso, which is a campus-wide holiday in the middle of a week in April where students get the day off of classes and Baylor brings a ton of festivities to campus as well as a live band (last year it was Needtobreath).

While the Baylor football team and games are really exciting and (finally) competitive on a national scale, our athletic department is not just a football team. Baylor has nationally ranked women’s and men’s basketball teams, nationally competitive tennis teams, competitive baseball and softball teams, and a historically famous track and field team that currently boasts a few reigning national champions. Baylor also has a national championship winning equestrian team and usually top five nationally ranked acrobatics and tumbling team. Now one does not have to go to all of these, and obviously not every is interested in ALL of these sports, but the fact remains that there’s an abundance of great teams to watch and cheer for.

So bottom line, Baylor is great place to take advantage of watching some great sports, talented theatrics and live performances. Best part? Most of these events are free to students.

Being a Freshman (by Hunter Gorman)

There are certain things that define a person. Athletes play sports, scholars are super smart, moms are awesome, and freshmen… well, we’re just freshmen.  Now being a freshman in high school and being a freshman in college (at Baylor) are completely different.  In high school, freshmen are the small wimpy kids that are fun to mess with and they always seem to be the butt of the joke.  However at Baylor, freshmen are the ones that are pretty goofy, are always looking for the next activity, and are pretty much willing to try anything.

I know this because I have experienced both. Check out the list below of some super-duper freshmen fun we’ve had from the first day of school until now.

1) Club Collins – We literally turned the parking lot of one of the girls’ dorms, Collins, into a club.  I was a party/radio DJ back home (Shreveport, LA) so my friends and I thought it would be a great idea to transform the back of a car into a DJ booth.  We had about 50 people in the middle of the night, dancing their little hearts out right there on the pavement behind one of the biggest girl dorms on campus.  Check out this video.

2) Road-Trippin’ – We have also found every possible opportunity to road-trip and let me just be honest… IT HAS BEEN INCREDIBLE!  One of the first weekends of college, I caught word of a Blake Shelton concert going on in Fort Worth, Texas.  The concert was on a Thursday night and at least three of us had a huge chemistry test the next day. Well, being freshmen, we decided to pack up two carloads of people and make the trek to Fort Worth for an incredible night of music and fun. We got back close to 1am, but don’t you worry… I got a B+ on my test!

3) Movie Tuesdays in 191 – Tuesdays seem to be the most boring days on campus.  Most of my friends and I only have 2 classes fairly early in the day and then absolutely nothing exciting after lunch. Being freshmen, everyone wants to meet tons of people and have a good time, so we decided to launch “Movie Tuesdays.”  The long and the short of it is, we pack about 25 people into one dorm room (Penland 191) and watch movies, eat popcorn, and drink sweet tea.  There’s really nothing more too it!

4) D.Y.F.O. – I’ve saved the best for last, Dance Your Face Off.  I mentioned earlier, freshmen are always down for becoming a part of something and gaining community with other people.  So once again, my roommates and I decided we’d make that happen.  Now we all love to dance and let loose, so we got 24 people together to form, “D.Y.F.O.”  This was a group that decided to do a flashmob in front of Waco Hall (the place where we have chapel) and that is exactly what we did.  We started practicing on the second week of school and we practiced for what seemed like eternity.  As they say, practice makes perfect, and we NAILED it on that Wednesday.  Check out this video!
