Each month, we post an update to notify our readers about the latest archival collections to be processed and some highlights of our print material acquisitions. These resources are primed for research and are just a sampling of the many resources to be found at The Texas Collection!

October’s finding aids

• Guy Bryan Harrison, Jr. papers, 1812-1994, undated (#46): Contains family correspondence, genealogical information, legal and financial papers, and clippings collected by Guy Bryan Harrison Jr., former director of The Texas Collection.
• Garry Hamilton Radford papers, 1921-1972 (#2221): Includes two scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and real estate records to do with Garry Hamilton Radford, dentist and first African American City Councilman in Waco, Texas.
• Alice Asano Masaki Hoshizaki collection, 1941-2000 (#3390): Biographical materials and an oral memoir pertaining to Hoshizaki, an American of Japanese descent who along with her husband Reiji, served as Baptist missionaries to Japan for thirty-five years.
• Gussie Oscar papers, 1909-1951 (#2121): Consists of copies of correspondence, advertisements, and programs, relating to Oscar’s management of Waco’s Auditorium Theater in the early twentieth century.
• Jefferson Whitfield Harrell papers, 1922, undated (#1482): Class notes and assignments from Jefferson Whitfield Harrell, a professor in Baylor University’s Mathematics Department for over 25 years.

Coleman, Elaine. Texas Haunted Forts. Guilford, CT: Globe Pequot, 2018. Print.

In the second edition of her work, Texas Haunted Forts, author Elaine Coleman recounts the history of frontier forts in Texas built throughout the centuries from the creation of New Spain to the present-day. Coleman describes how historical events including battles, massacres, and raids have shaped Texans’ ghostly lore.

Dallas North Garden Forum. Halloween Tasting Treat Luncheon Cook Book. [Dallas, TX]: 1973. Print.

It would not be the Halloween season without treats and goodies!  In their 1973 cookbook, members of the Dallas North Garden Forum offer their readers tasty ways to spice up the holiday from cakes and cookies to casseroles.

Southworth, Chet. Ghosts of Bell County, Texas. Charleston, SC: Haunted America, 2018. Print.

Chet Southworth’s latest book, Ghosts of Bell County, Texas, examines some of the more popular ghost stories emanating from local towns such as Killeen, Belton, and Temple.  To help the casual reader along, Southworth describes in great detail the Seven Laws of Paranormal Forces, the various types of ghosts, signs of paranormal activity, and the instruments paranormal groups use to monitor spectral activity.
