My Hometown: The Village

Entering Anacoco.

Home of the Indians

Anacoco, with a population of less that 1000, is a village. The home of the Anacoco Indians, there are only 500 children attending school in both the elementary and high school combined. As you can imagine, there are not many things to do that are close by. However, Anacoco is the known as the gateway to both Toledo Bend Lake and the army base Fort Polk.

Toledo Bend Lake

A map of the Toledo Bend Lake.

Anacoco has access to many lakes. One, Vernon Lake, is one of the more prominent and frequented hangouts! Toledo Bend Lake is a man made lake that forms most of the border between Texas and Louisiana.

I live ten minutes away from the southern part of the lake, which sports the South Toledo Bend State Park. You can swim, boat, ski, lounge on the “beaches”, and even go to the park for some biking! You can rent a cabin or a house on the lake and take a mini vacation, or you can make a day of it and just grill with your family and friends.

Anacoco and Fort Polk

Anacoco has many military families living among the natives! One town over, in Leesville, is the Fort Polk Army Base. Many families, such as mine, has close ties with the base. Parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and friends have a variety of jobs on post. Ft. Polk is a thriving “city” in itself, and plans of expansion and improvements are currently underway! This is an exciting new development that will greatly boost our economy and bring more diversity to our quaint village!
