In areas with a strong Catholic presence, some Protestant wives armed themselves to protect their families against potential surprise attacks, as seen above. What does this symbolize in regards to the nature of this civil war?

 The two photos above show Marta Doherty, engaged to be married to a British soldier. in the bottom picture, she has been tarred and tied to a post by nationalist (Catholic, republican) women.  What does this say about the Irish Catholic community’s feelings towards the British?

In the two pictures above, IRA fighters, one wielding a machine gun, the other with a petrol bomb, wear ski masks to protect their identity. What are possible reasons these fighters would not want their faces to be known?

 

The picture above shows a line of British soldiers. Why do they choose to show their faces, as opposed to the paramilitary fighters? How do their uniforms influence your feelings about them?

Derry is a city in Northern Ireland in which much violence between republican Catholics and loyalist Protestants occurred. “Free Derry” was the self-declared “autonomous,” or self-governing  republican portion of Derry.
