The story I read was titled “Searching for Gary Smith“.  This was written by Sarah Perry.  This starts out as Gary interviewing Mohammad Ali while he began to fall asleep in his car.  This then goes into Gary’s life and career as a reporter for the Sports Illustrated magazine.  Gary is a one of a kind reporter who is relentless as satisfying his thirst of questions to depict his subjects.  The story recall life events that contribute to why Gary is the way his is and how his writing reflects certain events in his life.

I definitely think the lead for this story is a descriptive lead.  It starts out with all of the events happening at once.  Describing what is happening at every moment in the beginning.

“Not necessarily to help him delve into the minds of his subjects, but because he simply likes knowing what’s going on up there.”  I think this is the nutgraph because this sums up what Gary was doing when he interviewed people; he did not just want to know of their famous attributes but who the real person behind those attributes was.

“A balmy day in L.A., lanes of traffic, horns blaring. The car dances over the lane markers. Clack, clack, clack. The car weaves in and out, next to this car, then another. ”  This is very descriptive because the story starts out in a very cautious manner it makes the reader wonder what is going to happen in this dangerous situation the characters are in.  She describes the danger Gary is in through sight, sounds, and feelings.

There were multiple sources in this story including friends and Gary himself.  If I remember correctly there were six sources in the story.

I think the boring part of the story was between Gary and Duke.  It does provide important information that contributes to Gary’s personality but it could have been left out.

The ending is appropriate for this story.  It ties to the beginning reverting back to Ali and Gary wondering how he feel asleep that day and that he did not use many quotes from Ali but still is inquisitive about him.

I liked that it was about a person who took an interesting job a step further by really trying to understand who he was interviewing.  It was just an ordinary story about and exceptional writer but a writer that is so unique one cannot copy on purpose.

I did not like how it was so long and how some parts of the story did not make sense or mix with the story overall.  Although is it interesting it was kind of over emphasized in some places by the writer trying to make a point.
