Practical Assignment Reflection: CPD appointments

For this assignment, I decided to attend the three sessions at Career and Professional Development Office. I chose to this because I am currently enrolled at Baylor University as a Chemistry Pre-pharmacy major. I am sure about studying chemistry, however, I am not certain if I want to continue a pre-pharmacy track since I have to take extra pre-requisite classes in for pharmacy school. My main goal in meeting with the CPD advisor is to open my eyes up to more options in the chemistry field.

In my first appointment, I had the opportunity to talk to an advisor about what I thought. I felt that the advisor was invested in my success here at Baylor and was intentional with the questions he asked and the suggestion he gave. During my appointment, he asked questions like, “what made you want to pursue pharmacy?” and “Have you looks at any other options in the chemistry field?” made me feel comfortable and more willing to open up to him about my experience here at Baylor so far. He showed me several websites that I could use to perform job searches in a particular field and also suggested that I get setup on LinkedIn. He did not mention taking aptitude tests until I asked since he thought that I knew exactly what I wanted to study in school; however I suggested that I should take it to see if something will catch me off guard.

Immediately after the meeting, I took the tests and went to a second meeting that presented the results. I was able to learn a lot about myself and see my strengths and weaknesses listed out. The top field that the test revealed that I would function the best in was in the sciences. This did not surprise me at all since I enjoy studying chemistry a lot. What did surprise me was that my top subject listed within he field was geology. Personally, I have never had an interest in geology and I do not think I ever will. A couple professions that jumped out were, a chemist, chemical engineer, nuclear chemists, biochemical engineers etc.

Even though nothing in the results surprised me too much, it was reassuring to know that I am heading in the right direction and that I will enjoy working in that environment. Currently, I am majoring in Chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry and planning to attend graduate school
