Overcome

I believe in the human potential to overcome extreme adversity to accomplish their goals. Certain people and events have the capacity to transform our outlook on life. Sometimes they rearrange what we thought we already knew or even place doubt in our minds. I believe that living in the United States today, every individual has the opportunity to shine on their own stage. Think about it. When the police shot dead an African American teenager, regardless of the cause of the incident, the first thing that pops into our heads is anger. Some of us stay home and continue our […]

Practical Assignment Reflection: CPD appointments

For this assignment, I decided to attend the three sessions at Career and Professional Development Office. I chose to this because I am currently enrolled at Baylor University as a Chemistry Pre-pharmacy major. I am sure about studying chemistry, however, I am not certain if I want to continue a pre-pharmacy track since I have to take extra pre-requisite classes in for pharmacy school. My main goal in meeting with the CPD advisor is to open my eyes up to more options in the chemistry field. In my first appointment, I had the opportunity to talk to an advisor about […]

Academy Lecture #4

John Williams came to Baylor University today to discuss his new book: The Untold Story of the Lower Colorado River Authority. He identified that the number one environmental issue in Texas and New Mexico today is the scarcity of water in the region. This entails that the region does not get a substantial amount of rainfall, which leads to unpredictable weather patterns that can cause severe floods or droughts. The scarcity of water led settlers at the time to utilize the river streams for agriculture, navigation, municipalities, and electricity. Williams went on talking about the history of the Lower Colorado […]

Academy Lecture #3

The human trafficking panel consisted of Theresa Flores, Emily Mills, and Robert Callahan. They all came from distinct backgrounds to join the fight against the second largest committed crime domestically and internationally. They spoke at Baylor today, having walked completely different paths in their lives to emphasize that the fight against human trafficking is one that everybody can and has to participate in. Theresa spoke first and shared her heartbreaking story. Her testimony struck me like a tsunami that I had turned my back on. The issue of human trafficking has always been there but just as most people, I […]

Academy Lecture #2

Dr. Jedidah Isler is an accomplished astrophysicist and activist. She came to Baylor University not to talk about her accomplishments but how she affirmed her interests and identities. Isler emphasizes that we need to affirm these identities and distinguish between those identities that overlap. Most importantly, she encourages us to give ourselves the freedom to change directions. In class, I heard fellow classmates discussing how Isler’s lecture will be the same as Brown’s, discussing racial reconciliation. So I sat in the auditorium expecting the same lecture. Surprisingly, this was not the case. Isler certainly did allude to racism and sexism […]

Academy Lecture #1

Eboo Patel travels the country speaking at a variety of events on interfaith cooperation. He preaches that the demand for interfaith leaders is at its all time high today and for America to withhold its tradition of accepting people of all religions and denominations. Distinguishing Islamic and Christian theologies, Patel highlighted that God made diversity holy and that we need to follow the ethnically superior way of other cultures. Despite it being the main focus of his argument, I admire Patel’s courage to speak in front of audiences with diverse backgrounds and traditions. As a twenty-first century college student living […]

Three Leadership Theories

Authentic leadership: I believe in order to be a good leader, you must be passionate in what you are leading in. authentic leaders are described as “inspired and intrinsically motivated about their goals”. Because of the passion, we lead for a purpose and these values that we lead by foster self-discipline. I believe I was most authentic as a leader when I was the captain of the basketball team. 3 years of finishing second place in our tournament is what really built up this passion for winning championship. I did not become an authentic leader overnight. I was also able […]
