I am a historian by training. Presently, I teach at Baylor University, in the Institute for Studies of Religion. Through the years, I have written on a lot of different topics, including Global/World Christianity, as well as many aspects of religion through history, as well as modern US history.
My most recent books are:
Climate, Catastrophe, and Faith: How Changes in Climate Drive Religious Upheaval (Oxford University Press, 2021)
A Storm of Images: Iconoclasm and Religious Reformation in the Byzantine World (Baylor University Press, 2023)
He Will Save You from the Deadly Pestilence: The Many Lives of Psalm 91 (Oxford University Press, 2023)
Kingdoms of this World: How Empires Have Made and Remade Religions (Baylor University Press, 2024)
American Empire, American Faith: Conquest, Christianity, and the Shaping of a Nation (Baylor University Press). In production for publication in 2026.
Presently I do most of my blogging at the Anxious Bench site, and you can find a full listing of my offerings here. I also have a Baylor-based website which covers a lot of ground in terms of topics.
I am still working out what to do with this present blog site, so please watch this space!
