I Walked With a Zombie (Jacques Tourneur, 1942)

I_Walked_With_a_ZombieThe second of the three low-budget, but extremely clever and literate horror films directed by Tourneur and produced by Val Lewton for RKO, this one certainly has the most sensationalistic title, but quickly proves to be much more than just a low-rent shocker. Sure, there is plenty of hocus-pocus in depicting West Indies voodoo and zombies, as well as plenty of noir-ish suspense and intrigue. Ultimately, though, the film endures as a incisive depiction of sibling rivalry and a family coming apart at the seams. The (possibly) supernatural tensions are just the window-dressing. (DVD)
