Seven Pounds (Gabriele Muccino, 2008)

Seven_PoundsMisguided but interesting film, if only because it proves that even the otherwise invincible Will Smith is, in fact, subject to a critical and commercial bomb now and again. I can see why Smith was drawn to this project, with its narrative mixture of dark mystery and tearjerker sentiments, as well as a plumb martyr role for him to sink into. The main problem, though, is that the film spends so much time and energy keeping you confused about what’s really going on that the eventual revelation can’t help but be a letdown, even if it weren’t so forced.
