Leadership Reflection 3

I sit at my desk in strife,

Thinking about what I will make of my life.

Time ticks by hour by hour,

Thinking of where I can plant the seed of my flower

A seed that will sprout into greatness,

My mind in an array that feels heinous.

Always being asked what my mission is,

Feeling like everyday of my life is a quiz.

Young and confused and focused on understanding,

Everything I’ve come to know and love expanding.

Learning to put others before myself,

Taking support off the shelf.

Finally, the fog has cleared, and I can truly see what is important to me,

Unconditional love, strength, and determination is my philosophy.

Reflection

When I think about my personal mission statement or philosophy, I base it around the factors of unconditional love, strength and determination. Growing up, we are all shaped by the environment we live and the people that surround us. My family has always been loving and supportive of no matter what I do. The consistent love and support allowed me to flourish into what I am today.

Through taking this leadership class, I have come to learn that my leadership style fits into two different criterium: Servant Leadership and Team Leadership. The ten qualities that are associated with Servant Leadership; listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight and stewardship, are all included in the way that I prefer to lead. The Team Leadership ideals also heavily influence the way I lead, being that I always like to be clear when I communicate and respectful and kind to the team. Being a leader in my dance team since I was twelve years old, I had to learn quickly how to be mature enough to lead the team. Seeing that now, I focused my attributes into the good of the team and was always confident in their conquests.

From learning all these types of leadership, I question some things about their attributes and claims. one thing I question is if a team leader is supposed to posses all of those qualities, what happens when they lack in one or another? Would they have to rely on something else to make up for it? Also, how can we summarize our leadership styles into one thing? I believe that as leaders, in each situation that arises we need to alter our styles to make sure that our followers and organization will succeed in every way possible.
