Introducing Lean Daily Management

One of the things that I have enjoyed most about my residency is that we use Lean Daily Management (LDM) as a way to connect with employees throughout the hospital and to learn about and proactively address operational issues we’re having.

This past week I had the opportunity to see how LDM is introduced and rolled out initially into a hospital. Now that Tenet’s Dallas hospitals are beginning to become a market, I have had the opportunity to spend time at the other hospitals in the market as well. When I first started at Lake Pointe, LDM had been in place for several months. I really enjoyed learning about the process, seeing how the administrative team responded to departments’ concerns and struggles, and watching it continue to grow. Despite this, I was also curious about how LDM is introduced to a new setting.

One of the things that was shared with the hospital LDM will be introduced to, is that incorporating it into a hospital really involves a cultural adaptation. It takes time both on the part of the administrative team as well as the departments to update their daily metrics, change goals, assign someone to report out, and to actively/collectively work together to address problems. At Lake Pointe this cultural change has already begun to evolve, but it will just be the beginning when LDM begins at the other hospital. It’s been a great experience for me to see its very beginnings, I’m excited to see where they are at before I finish my residency in December!
