Christmas

Christmas time in the Layne household is always interesting. With my family being so large it is always busy and kind of overwhelming. The kitchen is always filled with people and food. I swear, we have enough food in our house during the holidays to sustain a small large army for weeks.

There is one thing in particular that my family is famous for during the Christmas time, other than our awesome Christmas cards (look at header), and it is Nancino Bars.

Now I was convinced (until recently) that Nancino Bars were a Layne Family secret recipe. In reality they are a dessert that was first created in Canada named Nanaimo Bars. Somehow during the trip down to Texas the name was changed from Nanaimo to Nancino. And they are the most delicious things you will ever consume.

The Doctor Who Tea Party

So like I said before, I throw themed tea parties for my friends. I have done so many of them I can’t keep track any more. I have done: Alice in Wonderland, Disney Princess, Christmas, Dexter, and many others. The last one I threw was inspired by the British television show Doctor Who which all of my friends are fans of.

The show is about a 900 year old alien that travels through space and time in a blue police box called the TARDIS. This alien is known only as “The Doctor” and in the more recent seasons wears a bow tie, suspenders, and sometimes a fez. I (as well as a lot of my friends) dressed up as The Doctor.
I made miniature TARDISes, fezzes, and bow ties out of paper as well as a cake that looked like the time machine.

I spend hours baking and decorating for these tea parties and they are always so much fun. They are a great way for my friends to get together, talk, and eat.

The Things I Draw

I am constantly drawing. Like every single piece of paper I have is covered in doodles. During high school I would draw comics of my friends about silly little adventures that we would go on.

I have a lot of different styles of drawing. Usually I draw more cartoonish characters but sometimes I will do something that is realistic. And there is a wide range from extremely cartoonish to realism. And everything in between.

It’s funny because looking back though my old art I can really see how my art has progressed and how much better I have become.

I try to draw in lots of different ways and I always try to push myself to become better.

I am always open to drawing just about anything but usually my doodles are of people. Although I did go through a phase where I just drew a lot of mermaids. I really like drawing faces and different facial expressions. I am constantly drawing eyes and trying to get them to express a certain emotion.

I have a laptop that can flip into a tablet so I am constantly using it to draw. I got it over the summer and I have done hundreds of drawings on it. If you flip through the pages of any of my note books you will see people and characters scribbled in the margins of my notes.

I draw a lot of comics. Either about my friends, original characters, or characters from television shows and movies I watch. I love making up different stories and being as creative as I can be with my comics. A lot of times I will draw comics that are crossovers, which means I take characters from different TV shows or movies and put them in a story together. I think it’s really fun to illustrate how the different characters would interact with each other.

I draw so much and I think that I am getting better at it. I hope that one day I will be able to have a job that will have something to do with art. I absolutely love drawing and art. It is what I want to spend my life doing.

The Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen.

Last week I participated in GISHWHES (The Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen). I did a lot of crazy and weird things for this scavenger hunt.

Some of the things I did included going to a grocery store dressed as a superhero to help people push their carts, making a dress out of bacon, a suit out of leaves, and having a tea party with at least 50 stuffed animals.

Surprisingly my family was extremely supportive and offered to help me complete the items on the list. When I told my brother that I was going to force him to wear a suit made entirely out of leaves he just went with it. He didn’t even ask why I needed to make a suit of leaves. When I told my mom that I needed a bunch of bacon because I was going to make a dress out of it her answer was “yum”.

In reality that bacon dress was pretty disgusting.

After I set up the tea party with about 60 stuffed animals my mom told me I didn’t have to clean it up and our dining room was left that way for days.

The whole thing was a really great experience and I had so much fun participating in a world record breaking event! Even my family was entertained by it.
