Former Baylor quarterback, Seth Russell, will receive the 2017 Bobby Jones Memorial Award during the Bears’ Homecoming game against West Virginia at McLane Stadium on Saturday, October 21. The award is presented annually by the Baylor “B” Association to a senior football player for outstanding Leadership, Sportsmanship, and Team Play shown during practice for and performance in the Bears’ annual Homecoming football game.

In last year’s Homecoming victory over the Kansas Jayhawks, Russell threw two touchdowns and ran for two more while playing only the first half as the No. 11 undefeated Baylor Bears rolled to a 49-7 win at McLane Stadium in Waco. Russell was 9-of-22 passing for 144 yards, and he led the Bears on the ground with 68 yards rushing. One of the game’s biggest highlights occurred when Russell leaped into the end zone to score, following a dramatic 26-yard run. The run converted an important fourth down, making the score 21-0 in the first quarter of the game.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Russell went on to earn All-Big 12 honorable mention in 2015 despite suffering a season-ending injury in the ninth game of the season. He owns or shares seven school passing records, including the record for single-game TD passes (six) and the record for single-game TDs (six). He is Baylor’s career leader in total offense yards per play with 8.324 yards. In 2016, Russell was named a semi-finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award presented annually to the nation’s top college quarterback based on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments.

The Bobby Jones Memorial Award was established to honor the memory of former Baylor quarterback, Bobby Jones, who led the No. 11th-ranked Bears to a 9-2 season record and a 13-7 victory over No. 2-ranked Tennessee in the 1957 Sugar Bowl. Tragically, Jones was later killed in an automobile/train accident.
