Inscribed by Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) to the wife of his personal physician, Dr. Clarence C. Rice, referring to an evening of [Twain’s] reading the poems aloud to an audience in Venice. The volume is further inscribed with eight lines of verse by poet and editor Robert Underwood Johnson, and includes marks by an unidentified hand on several pages.
