Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Poems
Published in London by Chapman and Hall, 1856
4th edition in three volumes.
Tipped into volume three are three holograph poems, each placed opposite the printed version of the poem: “Question and Answer,” (Browning Guide # D0391.1); “Insufficiency,” (Browning Guide # D0760.1), which includes a note in EBB’s hand; and “Sonnet LXII” [42] from Sonnets from the Portuguese, (Browning Guide # D0877.1), which also includes a note in EBB’s hand.
The “Question and Answer” manuscript was presumably a printer’s copy for Poems (1856); the “Inclusions” manuscript was a printer’s copy for Poems (1850); and the “Sonnet LXII” [42] manuscript, originally a printer’s copy for Poems (1850) before EBB decided to remove the poem from the Sonnets from the Portuguese series in that publication, later became a printer’s copy for Poems (1856) when she decided to include it in the series.
