Laid in the volume is a printed message from the author “To All Child-Readers of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,'” dated Christmas, 1871, and an undated handwritten note signed (with initials) by illustrator John Tenniel: “Dear A. á. B./ “All’s well that/ ends well” !!!!/ Haste / Ever–/ JT.”
