Ask Sarah: Musicians and their lifestyles

Author: Chamath | Filed under: ENG 1304.70

Sarah, I am writing about musicians in the past who have died of drug and alcohol abuse. I am focusing on musicians including Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison and other legends who are noted for their significant contributions to music. I think the claim I am going to make is that these people should be viewed by society as positive role models given the fact that they had successful careers, were talented, hard working and motivated individuals and pursue music not just for the fame or fortune but for a higher purpose of wanting to inspire and pursue their deep passion for music. This is my broad question and claim. How do you think I can narrow it down. Should I not talk about some of the points I have highlighted above and restrict myself a little more?  What is my best bet for finding good sources for this type of research, is it books or online journals and articles? I think there should be a lot of articles about this subject in popular magazines. But what about their credibility? I think I might need help locating some sources regarding any philanthropic contributions of such musicians as we know that some musicians in the past have made meaningful contributions to society.
