Apple’s New Opportunity in China

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-12-05/apples-new-opportunity-in-china

The media outlet is the Bloomberg Businessweek and more specifically the technology section of the outlet. This outlet mainly deals with different business aspects that are going on either through the United States or Nationally. It is a very good outlet if your passion in business, as it deals with Finance, Technology, Politics, and Lifestyle.

This article is explaining Apples new recent dominance in China, and how CEO Tim Cook has made great relations with the Chinese. China Mobile is one of the top wireless carriers in China, and Iphone has made plans to merge for quite some time. The country has just now allowed 4g networks, which gives Iphone and Apple a great way to penetrate the market.

This deal would definitely benefit both parties, because China Mobile is large, and would give Apple a greater percentage of the market. Although Apple has created a lot of success in China, there is still a lot to work on, and they hope this plan will help with some problems, but there are many more to evaluate.

I think the audience for this media outlet is very wide, because everyone has a great deal of worth in the business market. Mainly business people would benefit from this media outlet, but business is a very huge aspect to life, which creates a large target audience.

Final blog

I think the most important thing that I am going to take from this class is being able to communicate to others in the proper manner during whatever the situation may be and do it clearly. During the countless hours I have spent on assignments in this class I have found that it does teach you a little something no matter what major you may be in. If you are in business no matter what level you are in a job from CEO to entry-level position, you will always need good writing skills. Being truthful, getting the facts, being accurate and giving credit to those who deserve it something that you can and should always use in the business world.

Continuing with the business world since that is the world I will join when I graduate from Baylor. I think staying in touch with the news and being able to consume it is something that you should always be of knowledge about. It is important because you never know when an unexpected event could effect the sales or the well-being of your company, so being able to understand and follow the news is actually pretty important in the world and I find that it is also something that I should and will take away from this class.

It really has been a semester where even though I may have known some of the things being taught, I truly learned so much.

Life lessons from journalism

What can you — an accounting, marketing, MIS (whatever that is) major — get out of studying journalism? As the semester winds down and you long for the day when you can forget everything I’ve taught you, I’m betting you’ve asked yourself this question.

Professors (and probably your parents) have told you over and over that effective writing is important. That is true. People judge you by how you communicate. And I know that you want to be able to get your point across.

But surely the lessons of our journalism class are applicable beyond that.

Let’s start with the basic guidelines for good writing: Be clear. Get to the point. Be active rather than passive. It’s a process — and if you skip part of it, the result might not be very impressive. Follow the rules.

Those are all fairly decent life lessons, don’t you think?

Now let’s talk about the lessons of journalism specifically: Get the facts straight. Seek the truth. Accuracy is important. Flowery embellishment is not necessary — and sometimes irritating. Give credit where credit is due. Be fair to everyone. Learn to recognize your own prejudices. Know the difference between facts and opinions.

Those are all lessons you could print on a plaque and hang on the wall.

And what have you learned about consuming the news? Know what’s going on. Seek out reliable sources of information. And I’m sorry to repeat, but know the difference between facts and opinions.

Early in the semester, it was hard for you to write stories without using first person. Now there’s a life lesson for sure. There are about 7 billion people in the world, so it’s safe to assume that, at least most of the time, it’s probably not about you. A friend of mine (an accountant, by the way) likes to say, “You wouldn’t worry so much about what people thought of you if you knew how seldom they did.” If you shift the focus to others, you will find life more satisfying.

We’ve spent lots of time writing leads. Why? Well, that’s a life lesson, too — you only have one shot at it, so make it count.

And how do you write a good lead? You figure out what’s important and put it first. It makes sense to put the important things first in life, but for some reason, both in writing and in life, that’s not our natural inclination. We tend to putter around with meaningless warm-up. Writing a good lead — and putting the right things first in life — requires an intentional effort.

Here’s the other thing about leads — it’s harder than you think to figure out what’s important. Remember speech stories? Every last one of you thought it was important that somebody “gave a speech” on campus. But it turns out that it’s what the person said that’s important. Otherwise, why would we care that someone “gave a speech”? To figure out what’s important, you have to dig deeper.

In journalism, you use the news values to determine what’s important. Could that work in life? Well, I can’t resist trying!

• Timeliness: Pay your bills (and traffic tickets) on time. This will keep you out of lots of trouble. If you don’t do things in a timely manner, you will waste a lot of your time cleaning up the mess.

• Prominence: Focus on people who are important to you. Your spouse, by definition, is important. So if she wants to see the ballet, go. If he wants to see the baseball game, go. Your boss, by definition, is important. When the boss gives you a task that you don’t think is important, do it anyway.

• Proximity: Things that happen in your community are important. You should be community minded and care about those around you. Your professional field is also a community, so it is important to serve there also.

• Impact: How much does something really affect you or those important to you? Don’t waste your time on other people’s drama. Stay focused.

• Magnitude: Can what you do — or neglect to do — affect a lot of people? The greater the number of people who will be affected by your actions, the more important your actions are. And it doesn’t matter how mundane the task is. If you forget to bring the spoons to the ice cream party, well now, that’s going to be a problem, isn’t it? Care about the impact you have on others.

• Conflict: If there is a problem or conflict, try to resolve it. You might not think the issue is important — like a housework spat with your spouse or roommate — but it often comes back to haunt you. That’s just the nature of conflict. That’s why conflict is a news value — conflict makes things important. Conflict needs to be addressed.

• Emotional impact: Emotional times demand attention. Go to funerals. Go to weddings. Express your sympathy when someone is sick or when someone dies. It’s important to be present during emotional times.

• Oddity: Things stick out when they are strange. Sometimes their value will be short-lived — they are only important on a slow news day. But if something is unusual, that’s a reason to look at it and evaluate whether or not it is important. Sometimes the fact that something is unusual is indeed important. But sometimes not.

Well, have I convinced you? Do you feel better about the many hours you have spent honing your writing skills and learning about journalism values? I hope so.

So here’s your (buried) nut: Figure out what’s important to you. Then put it first. And I would really appreciate it if you did it with proper grammar.

Media Blog Assingment

The article discusses the important decisions that were made after Steve Jobs died. Many people that were lovers of Apple thought that the leading brand in the technology industry would soon fall from the top. It hasn’t, and this news article is explaining that. Apple is in fact still the leading brand in the industry, and they continue to set the standard.

The writer talks about how the successor to Jobs, Tim Cook, will be unveiling products that Jobs created before he passed away. Apple has never been able to reach the lower market, because their phones are so expensive, leaving a large part of the market unscratched. Throughout the years the new Iphones have become more advanced, but the consumers argue that there is no real difference in the phones anymore.

Apparently consumers are constantly asking themselves the question of “Is this new update easier to manage than the old interface.” The general consensus has been yes, it does. The main thing that IOS 7 has been able to create buzz about is its ability to connect to the network in case some of the other modes don’t. People don’t realize this, because it was something that didn’t peak the usual consumers, this was an idea marketed for the experienced Iphone users.

The article states that Apple isn’t peaking yet, and it doesn’t look like they will anytime soon.

International News Sites: November 22, 2013

For my group project I am covering the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. This week I am looking at three international websites and seeing how they cover Obamacare in the news.

The first site I went to was Aljazeera. The article I found was about how the Affordable Care Act will provide better mental health coverage for citizens. The Affordable Care Act will make insurers expand their coverage to cover mental illnesses and addictions just like they cover other illnesses. It is said that the debate of mental illnesses has become a major issue because of the “gun-related incidents involving people who may have had inadequately treated mental illnesses.”

The next site, BBC, had a larger selection of articles covering the Affordable Care Act so I chose to read the first one. This article was about how a consulting firm, McKinsey & Co, had briefed White House Officials of the probably glitches with the Obamacare website. Even though Obama and his office knew about these glitches they decided to let the website launch on Oct. 1 anyways. Because of the glitches many Americans were not allowed to complete the enrollment process and successfully sign up for healthcare insurance. Democrat’s have felt uncertain about re-election chances in 2014 because of the problematic rollout of the Obamacare process.

The last site I am looking at is The Guardian. I found an article on how Obamacare is being threatened by Republicans so that at the state level it will no longer be effective. The American Legislative Exchange Council, also known as Alec, has proposed the Health Care Freedom Act to stop Obamacare laws from going into full affect. This act “threatens to strip health insurers of their licenses to do new business on the federal exchanges should they accept any subsidies under the system.” Alec sees this as justifiable because it protects local employers from the mandate on employers. In Dec., Alec will be holding its nationwide summit in Washington and will discuss this act further as well as more model bills that will be presented.

11/22

My topic is gun laws and relevant events. On the Al Jazeera website, there are a couple articles about recent gun. There’s also an article about the new 3-D printers that can make plastic guns.

On the BBC website, there’s an article about the US gun debate called, “US gun debate: Guns in numbers.” This will be helpful in learning about what other countries think about the US gun debates.

On the The Guardian website there are some articles that will give our project some good more information on gun laws and tragedies that have happened recently.

Overall these websites were helpful, however, most of the articles did not tell me anything I did not already know. But they will be helpful in my media project.

Media Blog (11/22/13)

For our group project we are focusing on consumer technology, mainly things that people use in their everyday life. We decided to focus on iPhones, gaming consoles, and the Twitter IPO. I have been following articles on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 throughout the semester. Today I searched for our topic in some international news sources.

For one of these sources (Al Jazeera America) my particular topic was nowhere to be found. I think that this is because Al Jazeera is more focused on political and global impact stories. While they did have a technology section on their site, it was mostly filled with more global perspective and tended to focus on “Middle East” topics. However I was able to find an article on the Twitter IPO, which still surprised me since  Twitter seems to be globally used and instrumental in some aspects of the Arab Spring.

On both BBC and The Guardian it was very easy for me to find articles pertaining to the X1 and the PS4. I think that this is because the audience for both of these news outlets are more concerned with the release of these two systems while the audience for AL Jazeera America would not be concerned with the release of the console.

On BBC there was a slew of articles on the X1 and it’s release. The article that came up first was about the Global Launch that took place today. This article mainly focused on the efforts that Microsoft has put into launching the Xbox One and how despite the early release of the PS4 in the US, that the X1 actually has an advantage in the UK since the PS4 isn’t coming out till the 29th. Many of the other articles on BBC were reviews of the console and the games that are coming out for the X1.

The Guardian was very similar to BBC in terms of content related to the consoles. There were many reviews and first impression articles and videos for both the Xbox One and Playstation 4. However The Guardian did have some more interesting stories related to the release of the X1. One article in particular was how two men were mugged after purchasing their consoles. After buying their consoles at a midnight launch two men were mugged as they were loading their newly bought Xbox’s into a van. The article then went on to say that officials had warned shoppers to be extra vigilant if buying a new console due to the high demand of the consoles.
