What Journalism has Taught Me: December 6, 2013

The most important thing Journalism 3372 and Mrs. Cullar have taught me is in order to communicate clearly with many audiences, you must lead with what’s important and keep it simple. Clear communication is not about the flashy words and holding out the good information from your readers like your eighth grade teacher may have told you, but instead it is about getting to the point quickly. In the business world, which I will be in someday, it will be easy to be overlooked if your writing is not impressive. I think this class has taught me how to communicate professionally more effectively than any other class I have taken. I know this will help me in the long run when it comes to searching for a job.

Also, I have truly enjoyed this class when I look back at it. At the time, I saw assignments as annoying and time consuming but overall I am happy we had to do them. I have to say the one thing I hated the most was interviewing. Usually it seemed like it was going to be an uncomfortable situation but it was never as bad as I imagined. It also made me more comfortable with communicating with people I may not have thought to speak with before. I think assignments like this have definitely grown me as a person and I am thankful for that. I believe Mrs. Cullar is right when she said the only way you will get better at something is if you do it often. She may have said this when we were doing our week of writing but I think it pertains to many things in life and I know that is why interviewing got easier as the semester went on.

At the beginning of the semester, I never thought I would be saying this but I know I am going to miss this class. It surprised me how so many journalism lessons could apply to life. Also, I am very happy I switched my class to this class because I could not have had a better teacher! Thanks Mrs. Cullar for making the class a lot of fun and entertaining! :)

International News Sites: November 22, 2013

For my group project I am covering the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. This week I am looking at three international websites and seeing how they cover Obamacare in the news.

The first site I went to was Aljazeera. The article I found was about how the Affordable Care Act will provide better mental health coverage for citizens. The Affordable Care Act will make insurers expand their coverage to cover mental illnesses and addictions just like they cover other illnesses. It is said that the debate of mental illnesses has become a major issue because of the “gun-related incidents involving people who may have had inadequately treated mental illnesses.”

The next site, BBC, had a larger selection of articles covering the Affordable Care Act so I chose to read the first one. This article was about how a consulting firm, McKinsey & Co, had briefed White House Officials of the probably glitches with the Obamacare website. Even though Obama and his office knew about these glitches they decided to let the website launch on Oct. 1 anyways. Because of the glitches many Americans were not allowed to complete the enrollment process and successfully sign up for healthcare insurance. Democrat’s have felt uncertain about re-election chances in 2014 because of the problematic rollout of the Obamacare process.

The last site I am looking at is The Guardian. I found an article on how Obamacare is being threatened by Republicans so that at the state level it will no longer be effective. The American Legislative Exchange Council, also known as Alec, has proposed the Health Care Freedom Act to stop Obamacare laws from going into full affect. This act “threatens to strip health insurers of their licenses to do new business on the federal exchanges should they accept any subsidies under the system.” Alec sees this as justifiable because it protects local employers from the mandate on employers. In Dec., Alec will be holding its nationwide summit in Washington and will discuss this act further as well as more model bills that will be presented.

Media Project Update: November 19, 2013

This semester we have a group media project and my partner, Katie Scott, and I have been looking into how the Affordable Care Act has been covered in the media. The Affordable Care Act is also well known as Obamacare and through out the semester it has certainly had its’ ups and downs. Most notably was when Obamacare was officially launched on Oct. 1 there were glitches in the website, HealthCare.gov . There were reported problems that people were unable to log into the website and once on the website many were unable to sign up for health insurance plans available under the Affordable Care Act. Because of these issues in the website, many Americans have disapproved of Obama and the democratic party and the way they are handling things. However, during a news conference on Nov. 14, Obama took full responsibility for the glitches in the system and ensured Americans that they are fixing the issues and that affordable healthcare will still become available for everyone. Recently in the news, it has been noted that the Obama administration had a private consulting firm come in and evaluate the system before its’ launch on Oct.1. In a disclosed document the consulting firm believed it to be risky for Obamacare to be launched because there were many flaws that needed to be worked through first. But Obama’s administration kept with their original plan and launched the system and its’ flaws.

PRSA Ethics Summary: November 14, 2013

Today I have read the PRSA (Public Relations Society of America) Code of Ethics and would like to briefly summarize it.

In the preamble, PRSA states that they view ethics as their number one responsibility. It is clear they are committed to operating ethically.

The body of the code of ethics is a about the professional values of PRSA members and of the public relations profession. The foundation of the code of ethics is formed by the following values: advocacy, honesty, expertise, independence, loyalty, and fairness. PRSA considers these values to be what holds the honor of this profession together.

PRSA considers the free flow of information to be extremely important for two reasons. The first reason is “to maintain the integrity of relationships with the media, government officials, and the public.” Additionally, the free flow of information is important because of the need to have knowledgeable decision-making.

PRSA believes healthy competition among public relations professionals to be a core principle as well. This is because they believe it is important to have an array of practitioner options so the public interest is catered to.

They also said, “Open communication fosters informed decision making in a democratic society.” This is important to form trust with the public by showing all the information appropriate for decision-making.

PRSA goes on to talk about safeguarding confidences, conflicts of interest and enhancing the profession. They go on to say how they are core principles as well and how they connect to the foundation of their ethics.

At the end of the Code of Ethics, PRSA provides a pledge for those in the public relations profession to choose to agree to and abide by.

Public Relations: November 11, 2013

If I were to start a company I would have to do something I love. And there is not many things in the world that I love more than fish tacos. So I would move to San Diego and open my very own fish taco restaurant on the boardwalk. Because I already know fish tacos are a big deal in California, in order to be successful all I need to know is what are the preferences of what my customers want on their tacos. If I were to get a lot of variety of preferences from my customers it would help me to build a solid menu of different options to meet my customers desires.

My company would issue a press release about opening day in order to get the word out about my amazing tacos! I would send this to local newspapers and radio stations to reach all different types of audiences. I chose newspapers because generally more parents read those while more adolescents listen to the radio. Therefore I am reaching a large amount of people.

My company would definitely use the internet to get the word out about all of the discounts and other marketing opportunities we have. I think it is important in this day and age to be connected to social media with how often it is used by consumers. Social media is a free and easy way to let my customers know about promotions and share their love of my tacos with their friends. My company would have a Facebook and Twitter.

My company would hold many events throughout the year to help the community. I think it not only good to give back to the community but it also looks good for your business. One event we would have is semi-annually would be if the customers bought 5 tacos 50% of the revenue would go back directly to the community. And then once you buy the tacos you get to help decide what the money will go to whether it is to buy books for the local libraries or sports equipment for the schools. By having an event like this, it will get the attention of people in the community that we care about them and if they support us we will give back and support them.

I think it would help my business if any nationally or a California renowned food magazine wrote about my tacos. Also, it would be really cool if my restaurant could be on the  Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.” I think in order to make this happen I would need to email and call the editors and create a relationship with them in order from them to feature my restaurant in their magazines. Also, I would use newspapers as well. I think I can begin to build a relationship with the newspaper by choosing their newspaper to have my coupons in it. Then when I approach the editor to do a story on my taco shack they will be more open to it.

One other way we would use public relations is their networking opportunities. If there was any way we could sponsor something or someone in the community in a positive way we would. One thing we could do is sponsor a little league baseball team and in return they could have the name of my restaurant on their jerseys. We could also network with other local restaurants in the same area that we don’t compete with and offer promotions for their goods in our restaurant and we could do the same for them. These would allow us to have free advertising that would reach different markets.

National Public Radio: November 2, 2013

This weekend I am taking a look at the media outlet NPR. I will be evaluating Nov. 1 Morning edition segment. This media outlet has many different programs you can listen on the radio, online and also through smart phone apps. They also have news articles on their website if you would rather read then listen to the new. NPR is a nationally renown radio station and covers a variety of news topics. Some major topics they touch on daily are Political issues nationally and internationally, health news, technology, movie reviews, the economy, and random strange news segments. Online NPR provides a 24-hour program stream as well as a hourly news summary so anyone can catch up on the daily news quickly.

One of the top stories was Food Stamp Benefits Set to Shrink. Starting Nov. 1, 47 million Americans that rely on food stamps are going to have to do will less. This is because $5 billion of funding that went to food stamps has gone away because the economic stimulus of ’09 has expired. What this means is that a family of four will be loosing up to $36 a month in food stamp benefits. This reduction in food stamps has affected more than just the people receiving the food stamps. Because of the food stamp cuts, soup kitchens and food pantries will begin to see an increase in demand for their supplies to feed families in need. Right now food pantries are already feeling stretched and unsure what the future will bring. Democrats want $4.5 billion in food stamp cuts over 10 years while Republicans would like to slash food stamp funding by $40 billion over 10 years. At the moment, the two parties are negotiating to reach a compromise.

One topic that caught my interest was FAA Eases up on Electronic Devices on Flights. This interested me because I travel a lot with softball and when I got home for breaks so I like to know what is going on with airline rules and regulations.  The FAA says that it is now okay for passengers to use portable electronic devices from gate to gate. Therefore, air travelers can listen to music, play games, and read eBooks throughout the entire flight. This rule will no apply to cellphones unless they are on airplane mode. Also, laptops must be put away because they are a safety issue because of their weight. These changes will take place depending on what the specific airline would like to do.

Another topic that caught my eye was Can Starbucks do for Tea what it has done for Coffee? This interested me because I am a huge Teavana fan ever since I stopped drinking coffee. One thing that really surprised me that I had no idea of was that last year Starbucks bought Teavana. When Starbucks bought Teavana they saw the opportunity to do with tea what they have done with coffee. Starbucks has recently opened up a Teavana that is not just a retail store but a tea bar. Like their coffee products they are making mixed tea beverages in this tea bar and they call them tea-lattes. This first tea bar was open on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, N.Y.

I think that NPR is for an older and wiser audience who care about political news. Also, I think the audience of NPR is people who listen to the radio wanting to know the important news that do not have time to read it or watch it on the T.V.

I liked this news outlet and found the topics interesting but do not see myself returning to it in the near future. The only time I listen to the radio is in the car and I enjoy listening to music. Also, I do not find myself looking up news on my computer a lot so I do not think I would be listening to NPR soon.

Dallas Morning News: October 27, 2013

I am evaluating Dallas Morning News today, Oct. 27. This news outlet is very focused on news going on around Texas but is centralized on news in Dallas. It covers topics on everyday news, business, sports, life, and entertainment. Two things that are different with this news outlet than others I have evaluated is that it has a weather and traffic section and also a video section to get news from. I think the audience this new outlet appeals to the people of the Dallas-Fort Worth and Arlington area. The age of this audience is most likely those out of college and up that are working in this area.

The first article I decided to read was 50 million reasons why UT communication students are happy.  In this article it announces the $50 million donation from the Moody Foundation to the University of Texas at Austin’s communication college. The communication college will now be named after the Moody Foundation in honor of its donation. This gift is the largest donation to any public university in the country for the study of communication.  This endowment will be used to design new courses, refurbish classroom spaces, and fund the building of a bridge to connect the college’s two main buildings. UT plans to celebrate this gracious gift on Nov. 7.

Another article I read was The Girl in the Closet: All in front of her.  This is a feature story about a 20 year-old named Lauren who has had a rough life growing up.  It begins telling how she had a rough time connecting to other kids in high school and how she never let anyone in because she was disappointed time and time again. She was stood up at her Junior prom so she decided to have a birthday party during her Senior Prom to avoid that disappointment. After graduating, Lauren had to take care of her adoptive mother, Sabrina Kavanaugh, who had breast cancer. But this was difficult for Lauren because her maturity level was of a 15 to 16 year- old girl. The reason why this was is because Lauren never developed right because her mother and father physically abused her and sexually took advantage of her. On the outside no one knew the pain Lauren kept inside of her and because of this she was made fun of and thought of weird. Lauren has becoming better at connecting with other people as she is now attending Trinity Valley Community College and setting goals to someday attend the University of Texas.

The article This Will Destroy You alleges ‘I Am Second’ campaign has been stealing their songs also caught my interest. This article is about how the Texas band This will Destroy You claims that I Am Second is using their songs without permission in their campaign videos on the web and on DVDs. The band filed a lawsuit in Dallas on Friday, Oct. 25. The band made it clear in 2009 that they would not allow their songs to be used by certain organizations based on religious or political beliefs and I Am Second is a Christian based organization that is connected to e3 Partners Ministry.

I personally did not really like this news outlet. I felt like I could not find anything that I was very interested in to read. I think this is because I am not from the Dallas-Fort Worth area or even Texas for that matter so I did not connect with anything that was posted on this news outlet.  In the future I will probably not come back to this news outlet for news coverage unless I was looking for something about the Dallas area.

Feature Story: October 3, 2013

I chose to read the feature article “Tending to Muslim Hearts and Islam’s Future” by Andrea Elliot this week. This story was about Sheik Reda Shata, who is an Imam of a Bay Ridge mosque in Brooklyn. Shata is a world-renown Muslim matchmaker of the New York area. He sees himself as a substitute elder to young Muslims who no longer live under their parents’ guidance because generally it is the parents or family who set up Muslim marriages. Therefore, Shata acts in their place and is a chaperon during many young Muslim’s dates. This is because it is under Islamic law that a man and woman who are unmarried may not be alone in closed quarters. However, before he must chaperon, Shata searches through his “little black book” and selects the best candidate for a young Muslim man. The story goes on about Shata’s family and tells the reader that he instantly knew she was the one he was going to marry the moment he saw her. The story also describes one of the dates Shata set up and it failed but that did not matter to him very much. He said he knows that Muslim immigrants have become very picky about the choices the Imam makes for them.

I think the lead of this story purpose is “Setting the scene”. This is because in the first four paragraphs the writer paints a scene for the reader. It allows the reader to feel the atmosphere of what is occurring.

I think the nut graph of this story is the following:

“Christian singles have coffee hour. Young Jews have JDate. But many Muslims believe that it is forbidden for an unmarried man and woman to meet in private. In predominantly Muslim countries, the job of making introductions and even arranging marriages typically falls to a vast network of family and friends.

In Brooklyn, there is Mr. Shata.

Week after week, Muslims embark on dates with him in tow. Mr. Shata, the imam of a Bay Ridge mosque, juggles some 550 “marriage candidates…”

This is clearly the nut graph because it tells us who, what, where, and why of the story. Mr. Shata is the one who is bringing Muslims in the Brooklyn area together instead of family and friends who do that in Muslim countries.

The bigger issue behind this feature story focused on Mr. Shata is the Islamic law pertaining to unmarried Muslims. I believe this intrigues readers more so than the personal profile alone because readers may not know the background of the Islamic law so they continue to read to learn more.

I found examples of descriptive copy not only in the lead but also throughout the story.

“When he walks in the door, his face softens. Loud kisses are planted on tender cheeks. Mohammed squeals, the girls smile, sweet laughter echoes.”

The previous quote describes the scene of the moment Mr. Shata walks into his front door. The writer uses the emotion of tender love to connect with the readers. She sets a scene of Shata’s family greets him by embracing him in kisses and laughter. One sense the writer uses here is the touch of the kisses on Shata’s tender cheeks.

There are 7 sources quoted through this feature story.

The part I found Boring but important was the “Foreign and Familiar” section. In this section it explains how Shata’s background is from an Islamic country but how he sometimes challenges the views of foreign Imams. I feel like this is important because it displays to the reader the ways that Shata connects to Islamic women through his sermons sometimes. However, during this part I definitely lost interest in the story as the writer was going through different examples of how Shata connects to Isalmic woman through his challenges of the religion.

I really enjoyed the ending of this story and felt like it was written very well. It tied into the beginning by finishing the initial story of the Egyptian bachelor. My favorite part of the ending was when Shata speaks about how his initial impression of a sheik was the opposite of what it is actually like to be a sheik. He also said that it is important for sheiks to possess such qualities so that they can connect to people, like a brother.

This story was extremely knowledgeable to me about the Islamic religion and the process of finding a partner to marry. I am surprised I found this article entertaining because of what it is about but I think that is because of the way it was written.

I liked the descriptiveness of the story because it kept me connected to the story because I could relate to certain situation or things that were described.

I personally thought this article was too long. There were points in the story that I thought were repetitive and I think that could have been cut down to make the story a shorter read.
