Grammar Rant

Along with the majority of this class; I truly dislike grammar. However, I dislike grammar in the way that there are absolutely too many rules and it feels as if they constantly change from teacher to teacher. Some teachers could care less about a few grammar mistakes here and there, but then you’ll have a teacher who will count off for every little mistake that you make. The one pet peeve I do have with grammar is when people can’t use possessive nouns correctly. By this I mean the use of the word your, you’re, etc. I can’t stand when people make the mistake of saying “your cool” or “your going to the store, right?” In the same way, I can’t stand when people use the word “you’re” incorrectly by using it possessively. “Is this you’re popcorn” or “is this you’re dog”? It just looks absolutely awful and in my opinion shows that they did not pay any attention to grammar when they were being taught earlier as a child. Granted, sometimes spellcheck causes people to make mistakes, but you could always correct them. Facebook seems to be the primary place for grammar mistakes and I catch them daily.

Punctuation truly doesn’t matter when texting because we are sending just quick messages; however, if you were to read an educational paper with absolutely awful grammar, it would not look credible. I still to this day have the absolute worst time with semicolons because none of my English teachers in the past ever felt we need to use them, but I feel as if semicolons are needed almost as much as commas judging by the last few years of college. Grammar is definitely important and students should know how to use it, but sometimes teachers are a bit too picky on where commas are supposed to be and where certain punctuation marks are needed.
