Photos

The first area we want to examine is photographs. Photographs are great primary sources that can literally show us a snapshot of someone’s life or experience. It is important to try and avoid bias and preconceived notions when answering these question.

  1. Do you know what this lady is wearing?
  2. Why do you think she is wearing it?
  3. What do you think her role is in the family?
  4. How does this compare to the form of dress in your culture?
  5. How do you feel women in a Muslim culture feel about this type of dress? (Avoid thinking of your opinion, try and put yourself in their shoes.)

  3. How do you think the young lady in the center feels about the type of dress she wears? What about the older lady next to her?
  4. How are the men dressed in this picture? How are they interacting with women? Does this reflect the larger culture?

  3. Compare what the men are wearing to what the women is wearing. How does this compare to other images?
