Petsko, Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry at Brandeis University, provides an eloquent defense of studying the classics from the viewpoint of a former Classics major who went on to teach something completely different. The title of his essay in in response to the decision at SUNY Albany to eliminate the departments of French, Italian, Classics, Russian and Theater Arts.
