J W Cocke Bill of Sale for Caroline001

This bill of sale records the exchange of Caroline for four hundred dollars. Whereas the other bills of sale and property lists mentioned in this post are fully written by hand, this bill of sale uses a standard form for the exchange of property, reducing Caroline to the level of land or objects. Notice how the document also condemns Caroline’s hypothetical children to slavery as well by adding the mention of Caroline’s “future issue and increase.” [J. W.
