Proprietary File Types: These files often require the original software or compatible alternative to be accessed properly.

  1. DOCX – a Microsoft Word document file.
  2. PSD – Adobe Photoshop document file.
  3. XLSX – Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file.
  4. AI – Adobe Illustrator file.
  5. DWG- AutoCAD drawing file.

Open File Types: These file types are publicly available and not owned by a single company, making them compatible across various software.

  1. TXT – Plain text file, readable by any text editor.
  2. CSV – Comma- separated values files, used for storing tabular data.
  3. PNG – Portable Network Graphic-, a lossless image format.
  4. PDF – Portable Document Format, widley used for document sharing.
  5. OGG-Open-source audio format.

Being aware of digital obsolescence is important because technology evolves rapidly, and outdated software can become inaccessible.
