School of Education Offers Online Summer Courses [04/28/2020]

Baylor University School of Education (SOE) will offer summer courses online as part of Baylor’s “Summer of Discovery” for 2020. Special tuition discounts apply for both current and incoming students, and the savings increase as the number of summer hours increases.

Baylor created special online course “bundles” for this summer, and the SOE has added some education courses that are not usually offered in summer.

“These online summer course bundles are a great way for students to pick up classes that help them progress toward graduation and free up time in their remaining semesters for work or study abroad,” said SOE associate dean, Dr. Suzanne Nesmith. Continue Reading →

Finishing Well: Closure for a different sort of Semester [04/21/2020]

I have given away over 700 books to college students in the last 11 years. Usually I hand them out in our last class session. This afternoon, I had to mail the books to my students as I have not seen them in person in a month. In each book, I write an inscription that tells students what I appreciate about them, how I have seen them grow, and what I am praying for them as they move on from our class. This year’s book is Prodigal God by Tim Keller – a reminder of God’s reckless love for us. This semester was more challenging as my students are scattered across the country, but this was more important than ever—certainly for me and maybe for my students.

For me, this is how I bring closure to a semester. When each new class begins, I always wonder if I am going to appreciate the students as much as I did the previous class. Twenty-four years of teaching at all different levels has taught me that I will, but it is typically not until I write the book inscriptions that I realize how much I appreciate the individuals in my class and the class as a whole. Dr. Trena Wilkerson, Professor of Mathematics Education, Installed as NCTM President [04/09/2020]

Trena L. Wilkerson, Ph.D., professor of mathematics education in the Baylor University School of Education, has taken on a national leadership role as the newly installed president of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).

Wilkerson, who has taught in the Baylor SOE department of curriculum and instruction since 1999, said she is honored by the opportunity to advocate for mathematics, which she has always loved. In her role leading the organization of more than 30,000 members, Wilkerson will continue NCTM’s efforts to “build strategic networks around critical issues, classroom instruction, teacher education and student learning.”

In her new role as NCTM president, Wilkerson will be working to make all kinds of connections to enhance mathematics education and benefit students. The beauty in mathematics, she said, is that “everything connects.”

Advice from a Full-Time Distance Educator [03/25/2020]

While distance education is new for most of Baylor, Dr. Nicholas Werse has been a distance educator for several years. Werse is the Graduate Writing Coordinator for Baylor School of Education’s EdD in Learning and Organizational Change, the university’s largest online doctoral program, housed in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. Werse runs a fully online writing center to coach the doctoral students with their academic writing. He meets with students one-on-one and also conducts webinars.

Werse holds an MDiv from Truett Seminary and a Baylor PhD in religion. He previously coached writing in Baylor’s Graduate School, often interacting with students from a distance after they had finished on-campus coursework. He has four years of experience teaching undergraduate college courses and spent two years teaching in an online format.

So we asked Dr. Werse for some advice about online interactions in academia.

Q: How do you typically interact with students in the EdD program?

A: We usually interact via email, and we meet via video conference. Students email documents for me to review. I provide written feedback and then meet with the students for a 30-minute one-on-one writing consultation. During that, we talk through the feedback and discuss strategies to help them grow as writers. In many ways, it reminds me of holding office hours for students when I taught in the classroom. School Psychology Students and Faculty Win Poster Award [01/23/2020]

Graduate students from the School Psychology Program in the School of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology garnered awards at the annual Texas Association of School Psychologists (TASP) conference late last year. Professionals from across the state gathered to enhance their knowledge in this dynamic profession and engage in professional growth. Leaders in school psychology from across the nation presented research on a variety of topics over the course of three days.

Baylor students Ally Yturralde and Felicity Frost, who are both pursuing the Education Specialist degree in School Psychology, were awarded “Best Poster Presentation” at the conference, along with Baylor School of Education senior lecturer Dr. Tamara Hodges. Their poster presentation, titled “Promoting Post-Secondary Education for At-Risk Students,” presented an overview of a pilot study that showed the effects of a college preparation program for low-socioeconomic status high school juniors and seniors at risk of not attending post-secondary education and who may have a disability. TASP conference participants learned about implementation, outcomes, and benefits of the college preparatory mentoring program. Continue Reading →

Special Centennial Issue of “Impact” is now Online [12/12/2019]

The Fall 2019 issue of Baylor Impact — a special Centennial issue — is now available online. Check it out to explore the history of the Baylor School of Education, learn about plans for the future, and meet the recipients of our Centennial Awards!

In this issue, you’ll learn how Baylor’s earliest leaders were committed to not only higher education but also K-12 education in Texas — decades before the School of Education was established in 1919. You’ll meet some interesting characters, including a donkey-riding dean, and gain a historical perspective with the at-a-glance timeline.

And we hope you will pay special attention to messages from our Interim Dean and department chairs that outline our path for the future.

Faculty and Student Literacy Research Recognized by International Literacy Association [11/20/2019]

Baylor School of Education faculty and doctoral students in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction garnered recognition and presented research at the International Literacy Association’s annual conference in October. The International Literacy Association is a global advocacy and membership organization of more than 300,000 literacy educators, researchers, and experts across 86 countries.

Dr. Kelly Johnston, assistant professor of literacy, and Dr. Phil Nichols, assistant professor, both received recognition as finalists for the ILA’s Outstanding Dissertation Award. Baylor was the only university with two representatives recognized among the finalists. Continue Reading →

Copple Professor Dr. Jon Eckert — A Catalyst for Christian Education Leaders

Words mean something to Jon Eckert. Sitting in his office, he clasps his hands and gestures, as if to underline a specific word as he discusses his work within the Center for Christian Education to position Baylor University as the destination for leadership development within education.

“A catalyst speeds up a reaction; it’s not the focus of the reaction,” Eckert, Ed.D., says as he leans forward.

Catalyst. It’s a good word. And for this former science teacher, its definition perfectly illustrates his calling at Baylor.

“So a catalytic leader isn’t the charismatic person out front whom everybody’s following,” he continues. “It’s the person that comes alongside and speeds up the good work that’s already happening. I want to be one of those leaders for the kind of leaders that come into our program, and I want them to go out and be those kinds of leaders in their schools and districts and also alongside students. They start to elevate the good work that’s already happening and speed it up.” Continue Reading →

New Book Explores the Intersection of Teaching and Christianity [11/06/2019]

Baylor School of Education faculty members Dr. Perry Glanzer, professor, and Dr. Nathan Alleman, associate professor, have teamed up for a second book, The Outrageous Idea of Christian Teaching, which was published by Oxford University Press. The book focuses on the various challenges that Christian professors face inside the classroom when intersecting their two identities — their Christian primary identity and their teacher vocational responsibility.

In 2012 the two faculty members in the Department of Educational Leadership, along with other scholars, began conducting a large survey of Christian professors across the nation. Their initial interest was how a professor’s Christian faith, as well as their traditions, influenced a variety of factors, such as teaching. While conducting this survey, however, the data collected from one question, regarding how the professors’ Christianity affected different areas of their teaching, sparked a concept that would become the core of the professors’ recent book.
