Genetic Analysis of Cell Polarity in Drosophila Photoreceptor

Cell Polarity is a feature common to many cell types. Cell polarity is mirrored by the asymmetric distribution of intracellular components along a particular axis. Cell polarity also can provide positional information in multicellular pattern formation. Therefore, the cell polarity is crucial for morphogenesis and development. Because photoreceptors are highly polarized as the light-sensing organs, therefore, we are investigating molecular genetic mechanisms that control cell polarity and morphogenesis of Drosophilaphotoreceptors.

The current research subjects include: 1) To elucidate how cell polarity genes contribute to dynamic cell morphogenetic processes, such as photoreceptor elongation, during morphogenesis. 2) To investigate the molecular genetic basis of how cell polarity is established and regulated in photoreceptors. To conduct these studies, we employ a variety of molecular, cellular, and genetic technologies, and use Drosophila as material. We use Drosophila because of the variety of sophisticated genetic and molecular tools available. Our long-term goal is to shed light on the genetic mechanisms of the cell polarity in organ development, morphogenesis, and pattern formation.
