Baylor student’s film selected for Dallas International Film Festival

DIFF Poster

The 2014 Dallas International Film Festival is presented by the Dallas Film Society.

Organizers of the Dallas International Film Festival have selected Dead End, a short film by Baylor student Alec Weaver, for inclusion in the North Texas College Showcase division of the 2014 festival.

Weaver, a senior film and digital media major, wrote and directed the film as part of a field production class taught by Chris Hansen, an associate professor of communication and director of the film & digital media division. Other Baylor students involved in the film include David Li, director of photography, Amanda Mott, production designer and Nick Rudkin, gaffer.

Dead End tells the story of four college students on a road trip and the small-town police officer called in to investigate when a member of the group goes missing.

“The students begin to get paranoid that a murderer is following them during their road trip,” Weaver says. “After they get arrested for drinking and driving, a girl in the group disappears and her friends are afraid she’s been kidnapped or even killed. A police officer from the girl’s hometown has to examine the clues and find her before it’s too late.”

Weaver says that participating in the festival is a great opportunity to meet and connect with professional filmmakers as well as students from other universities.

“I’m extremely honored to be in the festival,” says Weaver. “It’s fun to get Baylor’s name out there and show some of the great work going on in our department.”

The Dallas International Film Festival takes place April 3-13 at theaters across Dallas.  Dead End will be screened on Tuesday, April 8 at 9:45 p.m. as part of the North Texas College Showcase at the Anjelika Film Center Dallas. Click here for more information.

Where We Started (official trailer) from Chris Hansen on Vimeo.

A new film by Chris Hansen, the director of Baylor’s film and digital media program, has been accepted for inclusion in the Knoxville Film FestivalWhere We Started is Hansen’s third feature film (Endings, The Proper Care & Feeding of an American Messiah). Its production was supported in part by a grant from Baylor’s University Research Committee.

The film, described by a review in the Underground Film Journal as “simple, yet emotionally complex,” stars Matthew Brumlow and Cora Vander Broek as two married strangers who meet at a hotel while both are traveling alone.  Unsatisfied in their marriages, the characters are drawn to one another and begin to consider the possibility of an extramarital affair. As the two talk throughout the film, they become more aware of each other’s manipulations and their own vulnerabilities, leading them to reconsider their situations and the possible ramifications of their infidelity.

The Knoxville Film Festival takes place Sept. 19-22 in Knoxville, Tenn. Click here to read more about Where We Started on IMDb.
