Upcoming event: CASPER seminar with Dr. Keith Schubert

The Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics and Engineering Research (CASPER) presents a lecture by Dr. Keith Schubert, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering in Baylor’s School of Engineering and Computer Science.

“Microbial engineers in space!”

“In resource constrained environments, microbial communities form highly structured patterns to optimize resource utilization. In this talk, Dr. Schubert will present his work studying and modeling their patterns, emphasizing microbial structures in both a sulfuric acid cave — Cueva del Villa Luz in Mexico, which will be the subject of an article in National Geographic Magazine this July — and biological soil crusts in the Mojave Desert. Applications to the search for life in the universe and climate change will also be discussed.”

CUR offers grants to offset travel costs for CUR Conference 2014 attendees

The Council on Undergraduate Research is offering a limited number of $250 grants to help offset travel costs for individuals attending the CUR Conference 2014, “Creating the Citizens of Tomorrow: Undergraduate Research for All.”  The conference takes place June 28-July 1 in Washington, D.C.

According to the CUR website, preference will be given to individuals from historically under-represented institutions, first-time conference attendees and those who demonstrate financial need.

Upcoming event: Baylor communication faculty discuss genre and zombie films at department’s ‘First Friday’ colloquium

Baylor’s department of communication invites Baylor faculty, staff and graduate students to their monthly First Friday research colloquium.

WHAT
Dr. Jeff Bass and Josh Wucher discuss their latest research on genres and zombie films.  Bass is a professor of communication in Baylor’s College of Arts & Sciences and Wucher is a graduate student in the communication department.

Upcoming event: Baylor Art Student Exhibition

ArtStudentExhibitionThe Baylor Art Student Exhibition will kick off with an award ceremony, reception and special lecture on Thursday, March 27 in the Martin Museum of Art, located in the Hooper Schaefer Fine Arts Center.

The exhibition opens with an award presentation and reception from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Guest juror Sedrick Huckaby will present remarks at 6:00 p.m.

Following the opening event, the exhibition will remain open during regular museum hours until April 15. Museum hours are 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed on Mondays and all university holidays.

Admission is free and open to the public with a variety of student artwork available for purchase.

Upcoming event: URSA Scholars Week

Scholars Week is an annual celebration of undergraduate research and scholarship presented each spring by Baylor’s Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Achievement (URSA) Steering Committee. Baylor undergraduates who completed independent research or creative projects under faculty mentorship in the past year will present their results. All URSA Scholars Week events are free and open to the public.

Dr. Dan Shafer and Dr. Corey Carbonara discuss their latest research on the impact of new technology on the experience of playing video games, including ways the latest immersive ‘virtual reality’ devices can improve the perceived realism of a game environment.

Upcoming event: Baylor Percussion Symposium

Baylor Percussion SymposiumThe Office of the Vice Provost for Research is proud to join with the School of Music and others in sponsoring the 2014 Baylor Percussion Symposium, taking place this weekend.

The symposium features concerts and master classes with some of the most innovative composers and performers in modern music.  All events, including performances by Tristan Perich, the Meehan/ Perkins Duo, and the Baylor Percussion Group are free and open to the public.
