Waco Historic Landmark Preservation Commission

As a government commission under the Planning and Zoning Department for the city of Waco, the Historic Landmark Preservation Commission is responsible for “[adopting] and [disseminating] criteria for the designation of historical, cultural, architectural, archaeological, paleontological and natural landmarks and the delineation of historic districts; [providing] recommendations on landmarks and historic districts; and increase public awareness of the value of historic preservation.”

In this sense, all of the oversight for significant landmarks falls underneath the purview of this commission to grant official labels and protections. They are an authority for preservation work as the Certified Local Government entity that enforces official policies as stated under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, Department of the Interior, and can be a great resource for adaptive reuse projects in the city. An important ability that they have is to prevent the demolition of certain properties with a delay order if deemed appropriate or necessary. They also can grant certain city tax exemptions or refunds for owning historic properties that qualify.
