What Our Community Partners Have Said

Baylor’s philanthropy [program] is doing the unthinkable…teaching Millennials to be thoughtful, committed philanthropists. We love these engaged young people. They take their responsibilities seriously and handle themselves professionally. Working with them helps us to reflect on how we can better reach a new generation of supporters eager to make the World a better place

–Fiona Bond, Director of Creative Waco

The students with whom Waco Habitat has engaged live the Baylor mission.  I appreciate the cultivation of principled leaders that are prepared to serve communities through transformational learning and impactful scholarship, such as is offered by the philanthropy [program].  This scholarly and practical learning environment foster young leaders to readily apply best philanthropic practices by actively engaging in communities where God plants them.

I see the philanthropy [program] showing our community the guiding principles of Baylor University.  I fully expect these students to show the world the importance of service, leadership, transformation, teamwork, innovation, impact, excellence, exploration, learning, and of course integrity.

–Brenda Shuttlesworth, Executive Director of Waco Habitat for Humanity, Inc.

Participating in the philanthropy [program] with Baylor has been a revelation. I was not truly too surprised that these stellar students would be intelligent, energetic, enthusiastic, and insightful. Their keen persistence toward professionally representing our work was quite impressive. What has been the “aha” is noticing how it ratcheted up our own vigilance toward how Talitha Koum is viewed by funders. The preparation for our Philanthropy & The Public Good students was invaluable and also spurred on creative concepts for our future.

–Susan Cowley, Executive Director of Talitha Koum Institute

I wish Baylor had this program years ago! Dr. Hogue’s class has truly been a blessing  to  my organization,  Road to Damascus,  Inc. With their support, we have been able to reach more kids throughout our community through our feeding  program.  In 2015, our organization  was awarded a grant in the amount  of  $13,905.00 to assist with expanding our at-risk afterschool and summer meal program. We were able to purchase a food truck, which allowed us to increase our meals by 500. The students who worked with my organization  were very respectful, focused, kindhearted, and extremely  motivated.

–Mia Thomas, CEO of Road To Damascus, Inc.

Tasked with facilitating a collective impact initiative, Prosper Waco works to align the programs and services offered by a wide range of local organizations. This requires a community-level perspective on the non-profit and social service work being done in our community. The Philanthropy and the Public Good course allows Baylor students a rare opportunity to develop this broad perspective, which most community members don’t have. I see the work of these students as a way to facilitate an understanding of collective impact in our community, and I view Dr. Hogue as a partner in building collaborative relationships among local organizations. Not only does this program provide additional resources to support good work in our community, it promotes alignment of the work being done toward our community’s larger goals. I hope that some of these students will stay in Waco after graduation and use their knowledge of these community organizations to continue to improve outcomes for Waco-area residents through more strategic and informed philanthropic and non-profit work.

–Dr. Matthew Polk, Executive Director of Prosper Waco
