Performance Task

After reviewing the materials available through this site, students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their historical understanding in one of three ways.

  1. Newspaper editorial
    • Individual activity
    • Create a newspaper editoral reflecting your understanding and opinion of the events that occured in the village of My Lai on March 16, 1968. Support your stance using evidence found on this website, provided links, and/or other resources. Editoral should be 1500 words in length.
  2. Talk show interview
    • Group activity
    • Design a talk show showcasing an interview with two characters (a Charlie Company soldier and a My Lai villager)  involved in the My Lai massacre. Talk show must be recorded OR performed live in class. Character dialogue must include factual information/statements. Host should ask questions pertain to the characters testimony, opinion of the other party involved in the event, thoughts on the outcome of the Calley trial, and view of President Nixon’s appeal to Calley’s sentence.
  3. Compare and contrast essay
    • Individual activity
    • Students should contruct an essay comparing the My Lai massacre to another event in history. The event can be one we have talked about in class or one that you have researched on your own. Cite any included sources using MLA standards.
    • Requirements/format: 2,500 word minimum; 12 point Times New Roman font; double spaced.
