New Podcast: Recreation and Leisure Services

There is a new podcast up in our Meet the Majors series, an interview with faculty from the Recreation and Leisure Services major.  Students who enjoy the outdoors, management, psychology, or sociology might find this program interesting.  I encourage you to take a listen.  While you are visiting our site, please peruse the other podcasts available in the series.  These podcasts allow you to hear major information directly from professors, without the need to add another appointment to your busy schedule.  Kick back, and enjoy!

Be There or Be Square

Today is the day.  The University-Wide Majors Fair only takes place once a year, so this afternoon is your best opportunity to talk to representatives from multiple academic programs without trekking all over campus.  Please join us on the 2nd floor of the Bill Daniel Student Center for free Dr Pepper floats and great conversations.  Come get your questions about majors and minors answered.  The event will take place from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and it is a come-and-go event.  See you there!

University-Wide Majors Fair Tomorrow!

Don’t forget!  Faculty representatives will be available from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. tomorrow to discuss majors, minors and secondary majors at the University-Wide Majors Fair.  There are so many programs represented that this fantastic event will take place throughout the 2nd floor of the Bill Daniel Student Center.  Click here for a list of the majors and minors that will be represented.

MAP-Works Survey: Last Chance!

If you haven’t heard, MAP-Works is a survey for new students at Baylor.  Unlike other surveys that you may have taken, this one is intended to directly benefit YOU!  After taking the survey, you will immediately have access to your report, which will highlight things you can do achieve your best this semester and beyond.  Tomorrow is the last day to access the survey, so don’t delay.  You can begin the survey or access your report by clicking the MAP-Works link on the left-hand side of your Blackboard home page.  Your report will also let you know who you can talk to on campus if you have questions about your results and how to make the most of your time at Baylor.  This really is 15 minutes well-spent.

Boost Your Grade Point Average with Free Tutoring

By this point in the semester, students can usually see in which subjects they might benefit from a little extra help.  The Paul L. Foster Success Center offers free tutoring in multiple locations around campus.  Interestingly, the majority of students who use tutoring services regularly are not students who are struggling to pass.  They are diligent students who know that tutoring just might mean the difference between a B and an A.  To learn more about your tutoring options at Baylor, check out this website.

Announcing…the VETS Center

Veteran Educational and Transition Services, or the VETS Center for short, is a new resource available to our student veterans.  Recognizing that student veterans have unique needs when it comes to transitioning to Baylor, the VETS Center staff offer personalized services.  The VETS Center Transition Coach can connect student veterans to Baylor’s various resources that help students achieve their academic, personal, and career goals.  Services are free and available to all student veterans on campus, as well as ROTC students.  Please visit the VETS Center website for more information.

Hire a Bear Career Fair

Once again, our colleagues in the Office of Career and Professional Development (formerly known as Career Services) are hosting the Hire a Bear Career Fair.  Employers will be on hand to discuss full-time and internship opportunities.  Mark your calendar for the afternoon of Wednesday, September 19th to network with top employers in your field.  This is also a great chance for students who are still exploring their career goals to check out what is available.  More information regarding the Hire a Bear Career Fair, as well as information on resumes and interviewing, can be found on the Office of Career and Professional Development website.

An earlier version of this post used the former title, Career Services, in the place of the Office of Career and Professional Development.

Strengths & Vocation Seminar

Baylor’s Spiritual Life department is hosting the Be the Change Missions Conference next week, and the Career Counseling staff are taking part in the event this year.  On Thursday, September 20th, students will have the opportunity to explore how their strengths relate to vocation.  This seminar will emphasize how strengths can be used to glorify God and contribute to His work here on Earth, whether or not the occupation has traditionally been considered ministry.  This session will build upon students’  Clifton StrengthsFinder report.  Most students take the assessment just prior to starting their first year at Baylor.  If you are interested in attending this session, but you have not taken the Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment, please contact the Career Counseling office for instructions.

More information on the Be the Change Missions Conference, including the Strengths and Vocation Seminar can be found here.

Coming Up: STEM Job Fair

If you aren’t familiar with the term, the acronym STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math.  Students who possess knowledge and skills in these areas are in high demand…such high demand, in fact, that Baylor’s Career Services office hosts an entire career fair specifically for careers in STEM areas.  You can follow this link to learn more about the STEM Career Fair on September 11th, including the employers who will be attending.

For those of you who are undecided on a major, take some time to see which majors these employers recruit.  Even freshman can learn a great deal about internships and future employment by talking with recruiters at the fair.  The Career Services office is even hosting a workshop the night before the fair, so you can put your best foot forward.  Click here to read more.
