Performance Assessment

After exploring the material on this site the students will indicate their knowledge of Japanese American Soldiers in World War II by completing one of the following keep in mind the questions presented in the back ground:

How would you feel if you were asked to fight for a country that didn’t protect your rights? How would you respond?

Would being seen as suspicious by your government make you want to fight against them or fight to prove them wrong?

1. Journal Article

  • Write a journal as if you were a Japanese American Soldier in World War II
  • Include topics of how you feel about what’s going on in America, where your from, why you volunteered, and the brutality in the war
  • Journal must be at least a full page long

2. Editorial Cartoon

  • Create an Editorial Cartoon about the Japanese American soldiers
  • No racial slurs
  • Content could include a wide variety of topics, but make sure it expresses a view of Japanese American soldiers
  • Write a paragraph analyzing your own cartoon

3. Interview Questions

  • Create eight interview questions you would ask a Japanese American soldier that was in WWII (There shouldn’t be any yes/no questions)
  • Then try to answer the questions you create as if you were a Japanese American soldier (use ideas seen in interviews on this site)
  • Each answer should be in at least two complete sentences
