The polarizing result of the collaboration between French New Wave pioneer Resnais and famed “New Novelist” Alain Robbe-Grillet, this is a film that challenges at every turn and is guaranteed to thrill some with its mysteries and bore others to tears with its inscrutability. In today’s world of “puzzle movies” it doesn’t seem quite as radical a break as it did when it premiered in the early 1960s, but the sumptuous black-and-white photography and eye-boggling baroque locations remain both haunting and mesmerizing.
