There is no doubt that the cast is impressive—Ray Liotta, Tim Roth, Danny DeVito, and Oscar winners Kim Basinger and Forest Whitaker—and the thematic intentions are certainly good. But, while there are undeniable moments of emotional power, at the end the day this is not much more than a feature-length public-service announcement about the dangers of gambling addiction. Up-and-coming filmmakers be warned: If you’re going to make an Altmanesque interlocking narrative movie about human frailty, give us an array of pitfalls. (DVD)
