Body of Lies (Ridley Scott, 2008)

Body of Lies (Ridley Scott, 2008)Making action thrillers against the backdrop of the “War on Terror” is always a dicey proposition, and this one is no different. Watching a scraggly-bearded Leonardo DiCaprio playing a CIA operative on the ground being watched over by his overweight and overbearing superior played by Russell Crowe brings up all kinds of sticky questions about the role of the U.S. in international politics, the seemingly inherent necessity of deception even among allies, and the ethics of when someone is expendable for a greater cause. Yet, none of it ever comes into focus, and instead we’re left with another watchable, but ultimately forgettable thriller. (Starplex 16, Waco, TX)
