Wanted (Timur Bekmambetov, 2008)

Wanted (Timur Bekmambetov, 2008)Fueled by an infectious narrative absurdity and a free-for-all abandon that marries physics-defying action spectacle and often hilariously vulgar comedy (best exemplified in a surprise message spelled by flying keyboard buttons when it’s used to smash someone across the face), the Hollywood debut of Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov is a fundamentally take-it or leave-it affair: You either abandon yourself to the ride or roll your eyes. The story of a nebbish office drone who discovers that he is the heir apparent to a 1,000-year-old super-secret society of assassins relishes its revenge-of-the-nerd fantasy almost as much as its Matrix-derived bullet-time fetishism, which gives viewers the rare opportunity to admire the aesthetically swirling paths of blood and viscera from bullet exit wounds. (Those in the know will appreciate some of the names used by screenwriters Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, both of whom are Baylor alums.)
