The Nines (John August, 2007)

The Nines (John August, 2007)An intriguing, if not entirely satisfying puzzle film full of both metaphysical mind candy and sharp-edged satirical jabs at the shallow entertainment industry, screenwriter John August’s directorial debut is nothing if not ambitious, albeit in a controlled, limited way. Ryan Reynolds gives a fantastic central performance, playing three (possibly) interrelated characters within three (possibly) interrelated stories. If I understood it all correctly, the big reveal is either mind-blowing or utterly ridiculous, but either way it gives those who are so inclined (and have exhausted Donnie Darko) plenty of fodder for late-night dorm-room debates about the nature of existence.
