Fat City (John Huston, 1972)

Fat_CityHuston’s gritty slice of American underbelly is the anti-Rocky, a hard-edged portrait of disillusionment set in the blue-collar fringes of post-’60s California. Contrasting two boxers—one who had a chance and blew it and one who is young and teeming with potential—Huston engages his fascination with losers and broken dreams, and while the film boasts a handful of first-rate performance (especially by the underrated Stacy Keach, who arguably should have been the heir apparent to Marlon Brando) and a powerful sense of grim honesty, be prepared to be beaten to an emotional pulp.
