The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (Terry Gilliam 2009)

Imaginarium_Dr_ParnassusAlthough it will probably forever be remembered as the movie Heath Ledger was shooting when he unexpectedly died early last year, this is first and foremost a Terry Gilliam movie, with all the good and the bad that comes with any work by the the imaginative, but disaster-prone iconoclastic director. Unfortunately, Doctor Parnassus tends to revel more in Gilliam’s problems than his virtues; for every resplendent moment in which he takes you places you never quite thought possible, there are too many other bloated sequences and the kind of slogging narrative mishmash that makes you wish Gilliam would get outside his own head and try harder to get inside of ours.
