My Dinner With Andre (Louis Malle, 1981)

my_dinner_with_andreThere is a wonderful irony that the simple, first-person title summarizes the entirety of the film’s plot, yet it also refuses (purposefully, I would imagine) to capture its densely woven thematic depths and dramatic intricacies. Watching playwright and actor Wallace Shawn and theater director Andre Gregory playing fictionalized versions of themselves discussing the meaning of life over dinner would seem to be a colossal bore, but they make it endlessly fascinating and deeply meaningful, even if full enjoyment of the film requires a certain level of New York insider-ism that I frankly lack.
