Wise Blood (John Huston, 1979)

wise_bloodBased on one of only two novels written by Flannery O’Connor in her short lifetime, Huston’s baffling tragicomedy of contradictions about an angry young man who starts his own “Church Without Christ” maintains the darkly comical grotesqueness of the novel, but mutes much of its theological complexity by transforming its Catholic satire of Protestantism into an agnostic satire of faith itself. There is a world of difference between the two. (DVD)
