Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (Joe Berlinger & Bruce Sinofsky, 2000)

Revelations (Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, 2000)The first time I saw Berlinger and Sinofsky’s 1996 documentary Paradise Lost, which chronicles the arrest, trial, and conviction of a trio of teenagers for the brutal murders of three 8-year-olds in West Memphis, Arkansas, it was for a class during my first semester of graduate school. We were only supposed to watch the first 45 minutes, but everyone in the class was so enthralled with the film’s blunt portrait of justice gone awry that we ended up watching the whole thing. This follow-up isn’t nearly as scintillating, if only because less happens during the appeals process, but it is no less infuriating and disturbing. It also continues to prove that John Mark Byers, although a fascinating screen presence, is a frightening and deeply disturbed man. (DVD)
